Feeling the need to write...

Feeling the need to write...

Postby Willowhawk » 19 Oct 2004, 15:57

...but I'm concerned that I've lost my Muse. (Any hints on luring her back?)

That said, this is just what sprang to mind...

A dark grey day... her favorite kind. She lies alone in bed, listening to the music of rain beating against the windows and staring at a fresh sheet of paper. Nothing comes. She can feel words in her heart, almost rising to her throat, but she can't reach them. Where has it all gone?

Wow... that's depressing.

Try again later.

It's been said that work is like food. You only have to begin eating to increase your appetite for it. So, start writing and your muse will follow. Which of course leads to the great question of "what to write?" Imbas will find you in surprising places. Jot down your grocery list, or start copying the first story on the front page of the newspaper word for word. Sooner or later, something quite impressive will happen! Good luck.

Depressing? Depression is a perfectly legitimate feeling, and a perfectly fine way to start a story or a poem.

There's also nothing at all wrong with the five sentences you've already written. Consider them the first five steps of a journey out your front door. Take five or ten more steps and you're out to the sidewalk. Turn left, right, or maybe go straight -- your decision -- but you'll have to write a few more steps to go whichever way.

And if you see that you've made a mistake and taken the wrong path, don't erase. Just turn around and write about a change of plans and going in a new direction.

Never doubt the legitimacy of what you've written. Just keep plugging away until it feels right to you.

Just remember to write your way out of the problems; never erase until the words are flowing easily. Only then do you go back and edit.

Hope this helps. I'm looking forward to more!

What Crow said!

The first draft is from the heart! The head isn't used to later.
