The Drummingsong

I walk down the road
Thinking of what this journey might bring
I see a path from the roadside
That leads to the woods
I turn my heart toward the forest
Curious, slightly afraid
I turn myself to walk that way
Along the leaf-carpetted path
I wonder and question my decision
To venture into the woods
I wonder if the forest will have me
I must go in there
I am driven by curiosity
As a ship driven by wind
I step timidly on to the path then
Soft forestfloor underfoot
Quiet, still, unruffled
Air is cool and delicately fragrant
No harsh perfume of cities here
No noise of people
No traffic of lives
Just the stillness of ancient trees
I am afraid to touch them
Afraid of their ancient knowledge
Their sacredness is in the air here
I tread lightly
Unwilling to break the silence
Then far off I hear drumming
I feel the beat of fear in my own heart
I try not to be afraid
I try to remember
That the drummers are probably pleasant folks
I try to cast aside the last vestiges
Of xenophobia
I know fear of strangers is unkind to the people
Who might be good and decent
I walk on, curiosity overpowers me
And I need to meet the drummers
I hear a drumming song
A song in a language I do not understand
I walk along the path
Lead by the drummingsong
Louder and louder it grows
Faster and faster it beats
Faster and faster races my frightened heart
Even as curiosity grows stronger still
I finally come to a clearing
In these lovely sacred woods
I stop at the edge of it
Listening to drummingsong
Hearing the lovely words
Wondering what the drummers are like
Suddenly the drumming stops
And I hear a voice
Speaking in a language I do not know
Sounds oh so musical
So full of Nature's song
I remain mute and still
Upon the forest floor
Suddenly a gentle hand
Takes hold of my own hands
A voice speaks to me
I feel two sticks of wood
Placed into my hands
Two lovely drummingsticks
Two drum sticks for me
Then I am guided
Gently over
To sit before
The drums
The hand shows me to hold the sticks
And to drum with them myself
And then suddenly
I am drumming the drummingsong
The lovely Nature song
I hear voices joining in
Singing words I do not know
But I am drumming to
The same beat as they
And that's all that matters 'cause
Nature is singing
Singing the drummingsong!
