Farewell Deborah

Postby Eoin Dubh » 15 Aug 2006, 02:43

On Friday, August 4, 2006 Deborah White, founder of the Celtic music group Distant Oaks passed from this life. She was a devoted Christian who acknowledged the old way also. The mother of two boys in their late teens and early twenties who, along with her, composed Distant Oaks. The wife of Chris, who was her husband/roadie/sound tech and whatever else was needed. She was a Scottish Gaelic speaker and teacher who managed the Gaelic-4U mailing list for years. She was for years a member of Clan Donald and she and the kids performed at many of our functions. She will be missed.

A bit from her bio:
Deborah White (vocals, acoustic guitar, citole, cittern, fretted dulcimer) whose rich, expressive vocals have helped to characterize Distant Oaks' distinct sound, first began performing Celtic and Early Music in the mid-1970s. She received an honors degree in Medieval and Renaissance vocal music from Dominican University in 1981 and has since performed extensively throughout the Western United States, as well as in Scotland and Ireland. A popular and engaging instructor, Deborah teaches music and Gaelic language classes and workshops in Northern California and also runs Gàidhlig 4 U, a successful Internet mailing list for learners of Scottish Gaelic. She has recorded five albums with Distant Oaks and has published a book of traditional Scottish and Irish music.
