PACIFIC GROVE, California (9 July 2006) -- A California resident died while scuba diving in Monterey Bay.

James Michael Holbrook, 54, was diving with his 19-year-old son when he encountered problems off Lovers Point at about noon.

His son and other divers pulled him to shore and called for help.

Police, fire rescue and paramedics responded to the call and rushed Holbrook to Community Hospital of the Peninsula, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30.

According to Pacific Grove police, the victim became entangled in seaweed about 100 meters offshore.

In the silence of the Grove
I remember and miss Jim Holbrook,
my friend,
my brother in the Order of the Aspen,
who went so unexpectedly to the Summerlands.
We said our goodbyes last year,
not knowing how final that would turn out to be.

I grieve for now,
will be grateful soon,
remembering what we shared,
how you always encouraged me with
your positive outlook and gentle wisdom.

Hail and Farewell my dearest Brother…

Dearest Jim,

I'll miss you so much. Your inteligence, your witt, your soft nature, you have truly been an inspiration for me. I know only few people who embraced life like you did. I'll remember you as someone who was kind and caring and someone I could always turn to when I needed a hug.

Untill we meet again, my dear brother....

The Sirens have called upon another of our kind.  Jim died doing what he enjoyed, I know too well the allure of the deep blue, may his memories be bubbles of Joy and laughter.

Forever Blue
By Kim Chandler

Out where white horses fly Sirens call from far
Long ships gather to light the way a traveller's guiding star

Be still, hear the ancient word time moves ever on
Tomorrow welcomes a season's change like winter's song begun

The Forever Blue is calling deeper, the endless blue
Like sailors and dreamers Falling, falling...

Ride on white horses sail on the wind
Child of the Sea, forever blue
Be ever moving live wild and free
Child of the Sea, forever true, forever blue

Someday, from a distant shore, sailors all return
Loved ones waiting to lead the way leave all your lanterns burn

The Forever Blue is calling deeper, the endless blue
Like sailors and dreamers Falling, falling...

Ride on white horses sail on the wind
Child of the Sea, forever blue
Be ever moving live wild and free
Child of the Sea, forever blue

Ride on white horses sail on the wind
Child of the Sea, forever blue
She's the goddess of love
The goddess in green
The goddess of all
That I've ever seen
The goddess of hope
The goddess in brown
The goddess of all
That you've burned to the ground

I just want to extend my sympathies for those of you who lost a friend. I was very touched by Torc's post and the photograph there.
You can see the kindness in that man's eyes. I hope wherever the soul goes, his is flying free and happy and I wish comfort for those who mourn him.

Here in Ireland, two good people drowned at the weekend whilst rescuing a couple who were in danger in the seas. They managed to rescue them, but were themselves carried off by the waves.

In memory of those brave souls and of Jim - peace and happiness in the life beyond.
:candle:

good wishes,
Beith

His last poem, written a few days before his death:

I Embrace My True Essence.

All is complete in this very moment.
All life is, I am. I communicate understanding,
emanate compassion, and reveal the inner
beauty in all.

To know the truth is to know the way.
To be guided by the spirit is
to walk in the light of spirit.

My heart beats with the life force that is God in
infinite expression. With an open mind and heart,
I receive with thanks all the goodness life has.

I live the life I imagine!
I flow in the direction of my dreams.
All doors open before me, and I pass through
with courage and confidence.
