Very sick kitten

Postby Luz de la Luna~ » 10 Jul 2006, 16:01

Hi all

My son found a very young kittie laying by the side of the road  with no visible injuries other than it just lays there unable to move the top part of her body including her front paws.  She looks to be 4-6 wks old.  She is very alert, moves her back legs & tail, and she can lift her head and turn it when she is lying down, but seems pretty wobbly when I hold her up.  She is purring quite a bit, and not having difficulty breathing, but very thin.  For right now I cannot afford to take this poor little thing to the vet, and I'm sure if I did he would recommend putting it to sleep anyway.  I've given her a bit of diluted 2% milk with a dropper and she takes it all without choking, and water.  She is pretty fiesty, even as bad as she is,  because she tries to scratch me with her back legs, so I'm guessing she is feral and not someone's kitten(there are a huge population of ferals in the country).

Anyway, I'm very saddened because I think it is only a matter of time and even tho I didn't know this kitten, you know when they look at you with those big eyes, it's hard not to having feelings for it.   :???:

I don't know what I'm asking for here, whether to pray that she gets better(slim) or that she goes quickly & peacefully in her sleep....   :-(
I'm already teary eyed just thinking of it and my heart is aching...

Hi,
Is there a local animal rescue place that you can take her to? I'm in the UK, so things may be different, but my vet will accept strays to treat without charging me (although on the few occasions I've found an animal and taken it for treatment I've paid if no ownercomes forward, but this is not demanded by the vet). Afterwards the vets get in touch with our local animal rescue centres if the animal requires rehoming. Is it worth phoning the vet to find out if they'll treat her without cost to you as she isn't your animal but a stray you found?
Just a thought, and all my hopes for the best outcome.
All the best

there is kitten milk with colstrum (that you can get at most pet stores) you could probably give her with a small bottle, and there are several feral cat rescues in my area that will pick her up, take care of her, spay her and possibly re-release her or find her a home if shes material.  alot of domestic kitties are pretty feisty so she may not be feral!!!  Best wishes

Thank you for your suggestions & thoughts.  I called my vet & they said they could give me a reduced rate, 10% off, which isn't much.  lus I guess I am hesitant because I took one of my dogs in who had become sick overnight with a lot of vomiting, so they kept him overnight to give him fluids and antibiotics, and he died in the middle of the night, all alone in that strange place, and it haunts me to this day, 5 yrs later.  :-( (I'm a very emotional person..)

And there really are no feral cat rescues in this area, otherwise they would be loaded to the gills & honestly at this point I don't think there would be much that they could do that I'm not already doing here, we are getting some of the kitten milk you mentioned Guardian since she has been readily drinking the diluted milk I've been giving her all day.

She's been very alert and watching everything I do, and purring to beat the band!  Do cats purr if they are in pain?  Because she doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain, even when I move her front paws, and one twitched a bit, but I don't think she was controlling it.  However, it does make me think that there is still some possible function if the nerves are still working...or am I totally off base and just doing wishful thinking?

I am putting some signs up around the area to see if anyone has lost their kitty just in case it's not feral.  Altho, I would hope if it was someone's baby that it wouldn't be as skinny as the poor thing is. :???:

And now I am asking for a bit of healing energy for this little kitty, she seems kind of special for some reason.

And I really do believe she has a chance to make it!

Thinking of you and the little one - I'm sending you lots of love across the miles and Bethy my cat sends lots of healing purrs to her little sister. I think unfortunately the only thing you can do is leave this in the hands of the Goddess and see what happens  :-(  It is so hard watching an animal in pain - bless you for your patience and care.

As for the purring - yes sometimes cats do purr when they're very stressed and in pain. Apparantly the purring acts as a soother on their  nervous systems and promotes healing.

I thought you might like this little prayer that I say over my cat every night before we curl up for bed - it's from the book "Arianrhod's Dance" by Julie White & Graeme Talboys and as I said it tonight I thought of you:

Blessing on an animal friend

Lady of the Forest,
Goddess of all creatures,
Bless this friend.
That they be fleet,
And free of any care.

Lord of the Animals,
God of the Forest,
Bless this friend.
Keep them safe from harm;
Save them a place by the hearth.

lots of love

as a hopeful thought, if she is only 4 weeks old she probably is just too weak to walk, but with a bit of nourishment will grow into a normal healthy kitten  :)   (always good to hope right?)

Hi Luz de la Luna,

I have only just caught up with some of yesterdays postings. Have you tried offering the kitten a little tinned cat food - kitten would be best  it has all the necessary vitamins etc. or ordinary adult cat food if thats all you can get, cows milk is not always good for them.
A vet check would be good to establish the condition of the kitten but from experience kittens are get survivors. If it is bright and alert as you say and eats and goes to the toilet OK these are all good signs. Sometimes injuries are not always easy to spot and animals do learn to adapt. Cats do purr when in pain but when they are seriously ill they look it. Dehydration can be a main problem and something to watch for - try giving kitty little drops of water - little and often.
I have worked with cats for many years including rescue work, please feel free to pm me if you have any questions and I will help if I can.
