Eight Belles

Postby Jingle » 04 May 2008, 03:13

It's such a sad sad day. :gloomy:
She came in second. Just past the finish line, she collapsed with two broken ankles and was euthanized on the track. The more they push these horses, the more injuries there will be.
:candle:

And remembering Barbaro :candle:

It's such a shame.
Light,

For Eight Belles :candle: and all the other animal victims of entertainment abuse.

I first saw this on a action alert from Peta and signed the petition to have the trainer and jockey banned from horse racing and institute measures to prevent future tragedies such as this. If anyone else is interested in speaking up on behalf of animals like Eight Belles here is the link:

This has touched me in such a profound way.
I posted a link to a petition re: horse racing in ACTION ALERTS...due to this very tragedy.

Blessings to her...I know she is running free and suffering no more. My hope is that her death wlll inspire much needed change, in the same way her life inspired thoughts of beauty.

I, too, signed the Eight Belles petition. I just came across this story about the fate of race horses in Puerto Rico. It seems that the outrage over Eight Belles' death is turning the spotlight on this cruelty sport. Let's keep the spotlight on.
http://news.aol.com/sports/story/_a/los ... 2009990001

The story does make it seem as though losing race horses in the US don't end up dead and, instead, end up in happy circumstances. This is not the case for many. Some are shipped out of the country to be killed for meat. Others are sold to people who do not have any concern for them as living beings. If you live in Amish country, a I do, you should know that the underweight horses you see pulling their buggies and running for miles in high temperatures on hard roads are usually former race horses. When they, like the horses that plow their fields, can no longer work, they are sold for slaughter. The abuse that these animals endure during their short lives is horrific. This treatment is not the exception, it is standard.
