Laughing Gull

Postby Jingle » 31 Jul 2006, 21:06

I have two questions:
I found a translator that says
"Laughing Gull" translates as "yn chwerthin gwylan" or
"chwerthin gwylan"
1) which is more correct? (I'm not sure how or why "yn" fits)
2) how do you pronounce it?

(I have no sound on my machine at the moment, so I can't go find it on a sound site).

Thanks so much.
Light,

Jingle

Hello there,

'Laughing Gull' would be 'Gwylan yn chwerthin' because the noun comes before the verb in Welsh.

(to laugh-chwerthin
laughing-yn chwerthin
Gull-gwylan)

As for pronunciation (I'll try my best to do it phonetically for you)

Gwylan-"Gooi-lan" "g" as in "gallivant"then the rest as a drawn out Ooi! emphasis on the "gooi"

yn-"un" as in "bun"

chwerthin-this is tricky "ch" as though you're preparing to spit (sorry closest sound I can think of!)

so "chweh-r-thin" emphasis on the "chweh".

Hope that makes sense? ;)

Thanks for your help.  I had Gwylan right, but I was clueless on the chwerthin, because I was confused about the w making the oo sound.  Also, the translator didn't put the word order correctly, so I really appreciate your help.
