I used to play classical guitar, but it's been so many years.  I play the folk harp and zither now, and am learning to play drum - djimbe.

The violin. I've only been playing about a year, though. I love classical music, but I like to play a bunch of different things. I bought a lot of sheet music from a website in the States, including Celtic flute music (which plays just fine on the violin, generally). I stumbled across this site while looking for information on Turlough O'Carolan.

I currently play the flute (both the silver "band" sort and those of bamboo) reasonably well.  Probably good enough to get me a spot on a middle school band.  LOL!!  I also play the 12-string guitar (which is just like playing a six-string, only you hold down two strings with each finger instead of one), though like Jingle I play folk-y stuff and not Classical.  I have several doumbeks that get regular use at monthly drum circles, and I can play a few tunes on the recorder.  I have a fife that's made of maple and pretty mediocre in quality, and I would love to get a better one and learn it well.

I have played the clarinet in the past, and in fact, it was the first instrument I learned and the only one I played in the school band.  Sadly, though, I haven't picked up a clarinet in well over 20 years and have no idea where the one I once owned is now.

We should form an OBOD orchestra and chorus!  Or maybe with all the clarinets we have, The OBOD Jazz Band and Musical Revue!   :-)

I started classical guitar lessons when I was about 9 and continued for a few years.  Now I just play for fun - mainly strumming and picking along to other things, and the classical stuff that I can remember.
I think my neighbours very much regret me teaching my youngest to play the theme from the A Team though!

I have a (small) harp that I’m trying to learn.  I have both hands sorted – but haven’t quite mastered both at the same time yet.  The biggest struggle was learning to read music, as I learned the guitar from Tab music or just playing by ear.

And I’m reasonably adept on the tin whistle and recorder – though they both seem to upset the dog.  He throws his head back and howls, and then tries to wrestle it from me.   :-)

I can't say that I can play it at this stage, but I've just started to learn recorder - the treble/alto type rather than the descant.  No doubt if I had a dog, it would howl dreadfully!

Don't worry Lorraine!

Postby padraiginana » 01 Dec 2006, 05:46

Hi Lorraine!

:shake:

Don't worry about how a dog would howl (if you had one)...recorders are not all thst easy (actually, thart is the instrument that was referred to as a "flute" before the transverse flute sort of took over in the Baroque/Classical Eras.

Besides...I play the oboe rather well (completed a Masters degree in it)..but my Saint-Bernard wakes up, climbs the stairs, and "sings" every day when I practice.   :-)

I used to play recorder and harpsichord. Now it's celtic harp, wooden flute and fiddle with a clear focus on Irish traditional music. The fiddle is a recent addition (5 weeks now) and still sounds like a tortured cat when I play it...

Fiddle/violin is pretty difficult. With no frets, you have to place your fingers exactly in the correct positions, or else...  suffer the  :lioness:  teacher's wrath.

Once the ear is trained the cat will take a vacation but will still drop in from time to time for a visit.

Hey, all!

Wow, such a diversion: music playing.

Honestly, I play electric guitar - I rock out with my co- well, you get the picture.

I can play saxophone, although my lungs are pretty bad now.
I can play classical guitar, and own a six and twelve string acoustic. Some days you have to turn up the volume and hit the distort pedal!

Anything -Folk, Punk, Blues.. I love it.

I want to pick up the violin or cell, and I love the sound, but I'm nervous to drop $400 on a violin. Or a grand on the electric violin. DISTORTION!!!!!

:fear:

Chrissy Hyndes of the pretenders sucked at playing the guitar: or so she was told. When she stopped playing the music of other bands, she did much better.

I may stink up the joint playing Clapton (and I do), but I do a mean blues improv.

Ok. Ok. I'll move a different thread!
