Where the relics meet the road: Ireland's highway dispute
Archaeologists hope to stop a plan to pave the valley beneath the Hill of Tara.

TARA, IRELAND - A sacred hill, where ancient kings were once crowned and buried, is now at the center of a dispute about the rush of modern life in this newly wealthy country.
In the valley below the famous Hill of Tara - ancient Ireland's ceremonial seat and the island's most important prehistoric site - the government is planning to build a major highway to Dublin.
The highway has bitterly split the country, pitting the preservation of Ireland's Celtic past against its rapidly changing present; the ancient capital against the modern one.
The hilltop commands spectacular views of the valley below, where the
ancient elites lived. The highway's opponents say the serene valley will be ruined by a highway that will inevitably bring unwanted development.
As children race up and down the burial mounds and sheep graze nearby, visitors atop the Hill of Tara are disappointed when told of the planned four-lane highway. "It's a pity," says Franco Leone, of San Vito, Italy. "But that's progress, how can you stop it? Hopefully the people can block it."
As legal challenges to the project make their way through the court system, initial archaeological work in preparation for the construction has already begun, unearthing sites up to 9,000 years old. Archaeologists warn that the heavy machinery used in the excavations could destroy fragile artifacts.
"If, in the face of an international outcry, the authorities can get away with the destruction of a landscape that has been sacred for 4,000 years, they can get away with virtually anything," wrote the Irish Times' cultural critic Fintan O'Toole.
Despite provoking outrage around Ireland and drawing fierce opposition from the director of the National Museum, the planned highway is popular with locals. As Dublin sprawls and housing costs balloon, the commuter belt is expanding farther into bucolic County Meath. Commuters to Dublin often spend more than two hours driving along country roads from here to the capital, a distance of less than 30 miles.
Even Michael Slavin, owner of the nearby Old Book Shop and author of The Book of Tara, supports the highway.
"I can live with the road, simply because I don't think it will harm Tara," he says while stacking books in a small stone building that was once a stable.
But on the road leading up the hill, a small sign protests, "No Tara Road." A statue of St. Patrick welcomes tourists to the visitors center, an old church. Legend has it that St. Patrick converted one king, Laoghaire, to Christianity in this spot during the fifth century.
Tara's legendary mounds are colorfully named, if misleading. The Mound of Hostages, once thought to have been a prison, is actually the oldest burial ground, dating back almost 4,000 years.
Archaeologists say that no one lived within the hilltop ring fort called the Royal Enclosure - the inner sanctum was used only for ceremonies. With the coming of Christianity, the pagan rituals and festivals faded away, but Tara retained a symbolic significance for the kings of Leinster Province.
Later, Ireland's struggle for independence enveloped the hill; a mass grave of dead rebels from the 1798 revolt is marked by a tombstone. In 1843, hundreds of thousands gathered on the hilltop to hear patriot Daniel O'Connell.
An alternative to a highway, some campaigners say, is a railway, an option favored by Deb Highfield, who visited from London. Stonehenge, the ancient English site, has lost its tranquility since a new road was built near it, she says.
"As a visitor, I think a road here is a bad idea," she says. "But if I lived here and had to commute to Dublin, I might have a different idea. You have to find a balance."

The latest news is that the landstripping is continuing while Vincent Salafia is taking the Irish Government to court. The hearing was last week and the verdict will be in March.
Looks like Tara and Thornborough's fates are linked if you ask me.

It's the latest development from Irish heritage campaigner Vincent Salafia.
Vincent studied Heritage Law in the States before returning to Dublin to study European Heritage Law. He is putting his education to full effect by taking the Irosh Government to court.
Vincent is also a real campaigner, to protect an ancient castle, he stood in front of the bulldozers and fought off legal attempts to get him and his group removed.
Vincents latest court action is for Tara, the meeting place of kings from 6,000 BC which became the 700AD seat of the King of Kings, the High King.
As Tara developed, tribal seasonal campsites were created which ultimately became fortified camps with earthwork ramparts - Ring forts.
These were an integral part of the structure of Tara - they were the royal encampments for the great gatherings and towards 700AD they were increasingly the scene of bloody battles for control of the hill.
The Irish Government has decided that it is right to put a motorway through the Tara complex - they will miss the hill by 1km, but divide it from some of its ring forts.
An awful lot of people think this is wrong - Tara held such an important role in Irish Heritage, if they can do this to Tara, they have no respect for anything.
To make matters worse, they have decided to put a road interchange in the same location - this means there will be significsnt pressure for other developments that will eventually obliterate all that Tara was.
And why? So Ireland can have more cars to speed up global warming so that our planet will turn against us all the quicker!
It is no wonder the leaders of Ireland do this to the country's finest heritage - they probably don't think they will be around long enough to enjoy it with that sort of decision making.
The Tara High Court case will be determined in March 2006, the case is expected to go to Europe and is one of a number of campaigns determined to prove complexes such as Tara form a single national monument, not simply a collection of unrelated structures.

Hi All.
Is Tara not a designated World Heritage Site and if not why not!
It most certainly ought to be and if made one it would make it difficult for this project to come so close, as the UN are not famous for granting planning permission in such places and they are not easy to get around.

Ah but the Un are not quick to list any sites in the western world without the approval of the government in question are they?
All parties have been asked, right now Tara is not even on the prospective list.
In fact, it is the job of the county reps to propose sites for WHA status, and normally this has more to do with tourism than a sites worthyness.
Clearly the Irish government has decided that Tara does not have great tourism potential and therefore is worthless.

This is THE major site in ancient Irish history and when I finally get around to making the 'pilgrimage' to the 'land of my ancestors' it is the single most important place that as a Druid of Irish decent I will be making a beeline for, as do a great many tourists from around the world, whether of Irish decent or not!
The Irish Government members responsible for this atrocious road routing and failure to preserve Tara should be sacked, or better yet we should set up the old 'Wicker Man' and have a little barbecue, Edward Woodward style!

To avoid cross posting, can I refer you to the Save Tara "sticky" below this thread? I posted update info there today (and in Discuss Druidry) with a request to please write a letter of protest at the M3 and destruction of the area around Tara Skryne. We now have a new government and there is a chance to leverage some influence by a letter writing campaign directed towards the Taoiseach (Prime minister) Bertie Ahern and the new minister for the environment, John Gormley.
The outgoing minister for the environment, Dick Roche, signed an order on Thurs 14th June, sanctioning continuing work on the motorway. This means that the recently discovered ceremonial site at Lismullen will be bulldozed and destroyed, along with other archaeological finds in the area. In effect, it gives the go-ahead for the motorway to cut through this most historic and sacred site and to plough through the land around Tara and build a huge intersection bringing noise and light pollution and traffic within 1 km of the foot of the ancient site of kingship and druidry itself. This cannot be allowed to happen.
Letter writing is far more influential than any online petition. The government are supposed to acknowledge all correspondence and now is the perfect time to flood them with it, because of the formation of the new government and the recent Green Party appointee (Mr Gormley) to the position of Minister for the Environment & Heritage.
As the issue touches not only upon heritage, but also on finance, education, public transport, tourism, I would advocate placing a Cc list ("copy to") of the relevant ministers. I list them below.

Please do write. It will only take 5 minutes of your time and a stamp to lodge your protest at this travesty of planning and vandalization of the most important site of celtic heritage, spirituality, history and archaeology. Your letters are urgently needed right now.
Alternative routing for the motorway and improvements to existing public transport links have long been proposed for this motorway by the campaigners against it, but the government have been steadfastly arrogant in their refusal to reconsider and choose better options than to desecrate a place of national and world heritage for the sake of motorway toll profits. I write to you today to voice my shock and opposition to the M3 Motorway and proposed destruction of the Lismullen ceremonial site. I am asking you to halt this disastrous policy and to stop the encroachment of the motorway upon the area of Tara, which is surely one of the most important historic and cultural landmarks in your country, if not the world.
As an YOUR NATIONALITY (if other than Ireland) it might be said that I have no business in the affairs of your country. But as a MAN or WOMAN who has an interest in Celtic heritage and spirituality, what happens to Tara and the surrounding area is very much my concern, and the concern of like-minded citizens all over the world.
Ireland always seemed different; Ireland, always seemed to be in touch with its past like no other place, and that mystique is part of what makes your land a special place. If the M3 Motorway is allowed to proceed through this sacred area, I’m sure you will have a very fine road, but a road is all you will have, for you will have destroyed a treasure that can never be replaced.
Don’t make the same mistake that leaders of my country and others have made. Honor the past and keep it alive for future generations who may treasure the sound of the wind through the thorn trees more than the sound of tires on hard, unforgiving pavement.
Visitors come to your country to see these special places in their wild beauty, not to experience motorways, traffic jams, fumes and pollution. We come to learn about the past and to enjoy experiencing the ancient heritage of Ireland that captures the heart and mind. We do not spend our dollars to visit miles of asphalt overlying the countryside and areas of historical and spiritual importance. We want to be educated in our ancestral past and have it preserved, not eradicated, especially when alternative motorway routes, train and bus connections can be instituted.
Your government has been given a sacred trust to not only serve the present and the future, but also to respect the past. In Tara, you hold a precious and fragile thing in your hands. Do not let the history books show that one of the world’s great treasures was destroyed on your watch.

excellent action list; however the Taraskryne.org etc. link leads to an adult-only website, mis-spelled and labelled teenage porn. The other links are "evicted links" ie not on the server. Has the link been hijacked?

This is the link to Tarawatch - a Save Tara Campaign group. This link and the URLs under the "links" section *right hand side of screen* seem to be working well. I would direct everyone to this website for news info, campaign info, protests, etc.

As Andraste correctly says above, letters count far more than e-petitions. If people write letters, it will help tip the scales to have a review of the signing into effect of the continued work on the motorway and the destruction of the Lismullen site. So folks - please please write! Andraste - thank you sincerely for copying my post above with the gov ministers' names for letter address to other sites. I appreciate that very much. If you want to post the tarawatch.org address as a campaign/news site, that would be good for anyone who wishes to have info first hand.

thank you sincerely Kytty. I also got not reply from the previous minister but I think now is a very good time for heightened pressure given that the new minister (gormley) is a Green party member and the taoiseach (Ahern) has been given a rough time in the press of late so every bit of pressure is good right now. Thank you and all the other who write, so much for doing so. It all counts. It all helps.

Please help us promote our LOVE TARA march which will take place on Saturday July 21 in Dublin at 1.00pm. We will march from the Garden of Remembrance to the Department of the Environment, Custom House Quay, where we will hand in 50,000 petition signatures. Please email your contacts, post a natice on your favorite message boards, write a letter to the newspapers, call your local radio station, contact celebrities, political parties, etc... This may be last chance for the public to have their say.

Campaigners opposed to the M3 motorway running through the historic Tara Valley have started to hold a series of demonstrations in three different countiries today.
TaraWatch held protests outside Leinster House in Dublin and the Irish Embassy in London earlier.
There will be protests later in New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.
A protest march will also be held in Dublin on Saturday, July 21st at 1pm, which will go from the Garden of Remembrance to Custom House, the headquarters of the Department of the Environment.
Campaigners have said they are "inflamed" by what they describe as the Green Party's election pact with Fianna Fáil to agree to the M3 motorway project and today's announcement by Environment Minister John Gormley that the Government will not re-route the road despite Euopean criticism.
The demonstrations come as Minister for the Environment John Gormley holds talks today with European Commissioner for the Environment Stavros Dimas in Brussels.
Campaigners claim international support has grown rapidly since the World Monuments Fund designated Tara one of the World's 100 Most Endangered sites.
Darren Delahunty, one of the organisers of the London protest, said: "Irish people in the UK are outraged at the refusal of the Irish authorities to try and proceed with the road, even when the public are so against it."
A "Love Tara" march will be held on Saturday, July 21st, in Dublin.
