Upload pictures/ photos button

Postby Florence » 03 Sep 2007, 20:57

I don't have the "upload picture" button anymore. Instead I have "upload attch." This has replaced the previous one or I'm having a problem? I can post photos and pictures as attch. but they appear in a different way than before with the name of the file in my computer etc. The old option made the mail nicer I guess. Anyway is great to be able to post written files but as to photos and pictures it was better the other way.Is it me or it's how it's gonna be from now on?Thanks !!!!!!!

Yes, this is how attachments work under phpBB v3.

If you want a picture to appear as part of the message itself you need to upload it to some web space somewhere and then link to it using the "Img" button in the message window. I tend to find this preferable actually, as I feel guilty about using up forum hard drive space for random pics.

Oh dear, the "upload picture"-button. :-|
I just got it a few weeks ago and now it is gone again.

Can I please have my button back? :( I liked it. :D

The trouble with uploading pictures to the net is that I do not have a space on the net to upload to. Therefore, the "Upload picture" button was very much appreciated....

Could it return?

I'm sorry, Rhodonit and Aylyn, it doesn't exist any more--no one has them. You'll have to upload pictures as attachments, as John has indicated.

It would be nice if someone coversant with this version would write a nice new step-by-step-start-from-square-one-type guide to posting photos on this board that I could use to replace the old ones scattered about... (hint, hint )

Can you upload to something like Flickr and link from there, or does it need to be your homepage? (Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions here, I'm not a technophobe but some things elude me!)

Is that gentle hint for me? I'll write something generic up. It may not be perfect depending on what theme/style the user is using or what Attachment settings have been configured in the board software but it should be workable as a start.

Yes, you can use Flickr. Just about any web space will work as long as you know the direct link to the image.

Just please limit all posted photos to no more than 600 pixels wide and a maximum of 250 kb in file size. We ask this because a fair number of non-North Americans must pay a per minute fee to use the Internet and large photos take a long time to load for people on dialup. Also, some people have small screens and large photos cause the posts to expand beyond the viewable margins.

Use a photo editing program to resize your images, if necessary, before posting, or post a clickable thumbnail (I think all the major photo-hosting sites have that option) to allow viewers with broadband to view at the original sizes.

And, John, it wasn't intended to be all that gentle!

Another very popular site is Imageshack - http://imageshack.us/ - It's free and they supply you with the code for thumbnails for your pictures, so you don't have to work it all out.

I saw the upload file area... is this just for pictures or will it work for documents and music as well?

Where I'm going with this is the Eisteddfod competitions and it would be really handy to upload rituals, recipes, prose and music/media in this method...

Is this possible?

To a maximum of 256 kb, I think you can upload most any file type...at any rate, I can't find anything in the admin panel that says a certain type of file is excluded.

Try to think of it this way....

Upload is when you send files UP to the internet...

Download is when you bring files DOWN from the internet...

:)

It's kinda like the way I remember the difference between Forward Slash and Back Slash.

/ Forward slash is falling forward

\ Back slash is fallling backward

OK, Twyrch. NOW you're catching on! That's exactly how I need to be taught. Pretend you are teaching a 3-year old, and I may learn some of this stuff.

I stuck a photo CD in my computer, figuring I could "UP" load from it, but nothing happened. I am obviously missing something!!

Great photos you put up. BTW.

Actually, that's how I taught my "Mature Adults" computer courses. ;)

To UPload a picture, you have to have a location to send it to. I would use a place like http://photobucket.com/ or http://www.imageshack.us/.

Once you have an account, there will be a button for UPload your files. All you have to do is browse to the file (in this case, your cd) and click the UPload button. The webite will give you the code to copy and paste into the forum and your picture will show up.

If you need more assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. :)

Thank you, Twyrch. XOXOX

I've downloaded PhotoBucket, so now I'm going to see if I can understand it.

Twig & Butterfly Watcher, I'm glad you found my advice useful. Anything I can do to help. :)

To post a link, just follow these steps...

1) Locate the webpage you want to use. In the address bar (white bar containing the HTTP), click once to highlight the text in blue. Right click on the text and choose copy.

If this doesn't work for you, or if you prefer to use the keyboard, click in the address bar and press CTRL and the A button. This highlights all of your text. Next, press the CTRL and the C button. This copies all of your text.

2) Once you have the link copied, go into your message and right-click to bring up the menu box, and choose PASTE. If this doesn't work for you, or if you prefer to use the keyboard, click in the message area of your post and pres CTRL and the V button to paste the link.

Once the link is pasted into the message box area, it will automatically become a link when you hit submit. :)
