Good luck Romlia, i`v got my veg patch at home, it`s a lot of hard work but worth it just for the taste of real food. Aylyn it does look like Japanese knotweed, you might have to get some help getting that out, it`s very persistant stuff.

The plant you photographed just before your garden shed looks like Japanese Knotweed to me, and that is an invasive, nasty species....

 

Oh dear! Can I burn it to death? I have burnt huge areas already. I dont want to use weed killer y see.

The trouble with this plant are the roots. They break easily, and even small pieces ensure that the plant returns. I had it in my garden too (it is practically everywhere), and removed it as soon as I saw a small shoot. This kept it down, but it was present even after 10 years of this practice.

There are some good websites giving tips on how to get rid of it, but I think it will boil down to weedkiller eventually, if you want to get rid of it forever.

You could try contacting your local council or enviromental agency, they might be able to help.

Hi all!
On reading advice and talking to other allotment keepers in my area I came to the conclusion, that no matter what I do or the council does, this b@stard is gonna keep coming back. So I decided the muthers going to burn! And it did. The allotments turning me feral!
I know it will keep popping up, but im going to keep burning it and digging the 2 meter roots and burning them too.
The allotment is looking vast now the knotweed is down and a skip is coming tomorrow for the rubbish and the lopsided potting shed.

Virtual gardening! Great stuff!

You know what Romelia? This is a really nice idea of yours to post updates on your grove as it takes shape. I think it should be made a "sticky" so it doesn't get lost in the post sequence. It will be really nice for everyone to watch a 'druid grove' take shape and see the changes you make to it, the plants you grow there and the turning seasons. For all those without a plot or garden of their own, it's a chance to garden vicariously (while someone else does all the work )

I really appreciate seeing your pictures and it would be a very collaborative thing if people, like the folks above, can give suggestions and ideas to you on how to treat certain things, if you have issues with them, like the dreaded knotweed if that's what it was.

Maybe in time if you are having a little "inauguration ceremony" when it takes shape, or a celebration of the seasons with friends/other Obodies, it would be nice to post those pics too if people didn't mind or their faces were covered. A working, growing grove. Really nice!

Sounds like a great idea! I’m thinking of opening up to OBODies in the area. But im going to hopefully get to chat to Damh about all that first.

Hello all! Its been a weird week! I had to go in to hospital for a little op a week ago and cant do anything for a few weeks so im in a bit of pain, uncomfortable, miserable and frustrated, so I cant do much at Hazel Grove

But I got the trusty whip out and put it to use on some willing victims and managed to get them to tear down the potting shed and clear some weeds. We found more old paths a few dead mice and a lot of inspiration!!!!

I'm so sorry to read that you've been ill and under the weather. I hope that you'll be on the road to recovery and right as rain again soon. It is really a pleasure for us to see your grove and to watch you shape it (or the recent victims of the whip!) - you have a huge plot there and I am sure it will be an incredibly peaceful and beautiful and fun place to be as you develop it to your grove.
