Prosilver board style - request for suggestions

Postby Kernos » 11 Sep 2007, 01:11

Two styles com with the new board software - Prosilver and Subsilver2. Prosilver is the default phpBB 3 style and is most compatible with thesoft ware. EG, modifying the board is much easier with Prosilver than Subsilver and I suspect with time, Subsilver wlll be phased out.

We made Subsilver the default style for this board because it was similar to the old board in look and icons. And, frankly most people I have asked like Subsilver better than Prosilver. Just having the Avatar and profile info on the right instead of the left discombobulates many of us. And many just do not like the cyan and while lettering of the headers or even the hover effect.

The nice thing is that it is very easy to change the colors. EG, I changed the rollover or hover color in the forum list and topic list to a light green from an 'orrible cream color. I am not satisfied with the precise shade of green, but was just playing in order to figure it out. Ultimately I would like to have both a blue and a green style, as well as an 'OBOD' style.

For the blue I was thinking making it more indigo, less cyan, less bright and perhaps use something besides white for header lettering and changing the red in the icons and poll bars to a more earthy orange. But i am not very good at design and color coordination.

I would like to suggest that you try out Prosilver just to get a feel for how it works and suggest some coloring schemes, including th hex numbers for the colors if you know how to do that. For this we need not limit ourselfves to "web-safe colors" which, IMO is passé.

To change to Prosilver choose User Control Panel->Board Preferences->My Board Style->prosilver.

Please let me know what you think and thanks,

Kernos

Well, the ranks show up correctly on prosilver. As for the colors, I have a problem with vision and computer screens in the first place so always stick with the default colors so honestly, the default colors are best for me.

I was using Subsilver2, then changed to Prosilver per suggestion to try it out. I actually prefer the (I think it was called) Subtrail on the other board version. I just like earthy colors, and my favorite color is green.
Here's a link to an easy to use Color Picker (for anyone who wants to test out some color schemes):
http://www.pagetutor.com/colorpicker/index.html
Just playing around with it, I liked these results:
Background: 009900
Text: FFFF66
Link: 0000FF
Visited Link: 880088
Hover: 0099FF
Active Link: FF0000

For a 'not-so-wild' look, I'd choose this:
Background: 006600
Text: FFFF99
Link: 0000FF
Visited Link: CC33FF
Hover: 0099FF
Active Link: FF0000

I guess I just like darker colored backgrounds, with lighter yellow colored texts.
And the yellow 'smilie' emotes look really fabulous in contrast with a dark green background!

I'm trying the ProSilver as well to give you a hand, but I'm not sure where you guys are going to modify your colors to see how it looks.

Am I missing something?

Hiya Twyrch! :hiya:

I wasn't modifying the board theme, just testing out colors on the color picker page.
I don't know how the software for message boards works, but I assume there are pre-made layouts. And I think Kernos was asking about alternative color schemes, other than what is typically available. So I tossed in my preference...not that anyone else would like it. :-)

People who aren't skilled at picking colors, you may like to play around with ColorizeIt! at http://beta.colorizeit.com/ and see what you can come up with. It's a bit rough but worth a peek, I think. When you go to that page, look for the option under "phpBB 3 Styles" called "Prosilver (for phpBB 3 RC 5)". The nice thing about this site is that you can copy and paste bookmarks of the schemes you've created....

Ah! thanks John!

I like the "Glass Theme". Maybe that's because I'm partial to Red and Black. :cloud9:

Thanks Dryadia and all. One problem with light text on a dark background is that aging eyes have more trouble reading it than dark text on light. There is some "rule" about this in web design. Of course this does not mean we cannot have such a style to be chosen by the user. Another is that most of our smilies are made for light backgrounds. (Someone using Chronicles on the old board asked, "why do all the smilies have beards?" :D ) This is because any anti-aliasing of the edges has to be either dark OR light. The smilies and other icons that look good on both backgrounds will have zaggies on the edge, or are so small one can barely see the zaggies.

I find the combination of 009900/FFFF66 shimmers for me which induces migraines :-( 006600/FFFF99 works better (again for me), though I would desaturate the text too about FEFFB9 or even FEFFDC or so as it provides more contrast, but is still yellowish. (notice I do not limit things to websafe colors. Since most people are using 24 (millions) or 16 bit )thousands) colour settings, I no longer consider 8 bit (256 of which web safe is a subset) color limits necessary). Note too that phpBB 3 does ot limit itself to web safe colors.

I was hoping the phpbb 3 board would allow one to choose a smiley set depending on what styles is currently in use, but it does not. Perhaps I just worry too much about such things.

This is great John. I was not aware of it and is certainly easier that changing the colour.css file, uploading it and looking at the results...

For Mac users there is a great freeware program called ColorTagGen which works in combination with the OS X Color Picker. I have also found 2 plugins to the Apple color picker useful: Painter's Picker (shareware) and HexColorPicker which is free. I find the Painter picker well worth the cost.

Yes, thanks. I rather tend to like 'earthy' colors these days. I made that one in about a minute, while writing the previous post, so you can see how easy it is to toss one together.
