Prosilver style posting - wasted space.

Postby Kernos » 11 Sep 2007, 17:35

In the Prosilver style, there is a lot of wasted space below the text box, due to the smiles cell of the table.

I would like to increase the length of the text box to match the smilie length.

Has anyone a clue where the code to do this would be?

TIA,

Bill

I'm not seeing that wasted space. This is the way it looks to me for regular replies:

And here is how the PM box looks:

I see it in subsilver2 (haven't tried prosilver yet). It depends upon your window size to an extent. If you narrow your window, the smilies column gets narrower and longer because it's no-doubt sized as a percentage not a fixed pixel width. On the other hand, the TEXTAREA is limited to 15 rows (2 of which are not visible due to margining, I think).

If you can get to the part of the PHP code that sets up this page, you should be able to change the default size in the TEXTAREA tag. Where that is, I have no clue. On the other hand, the 15 rows is convenient because no matter how wide your screen is, you ought to be able to see the whole text box. Does this make sense?

If not, then I have no clue, and pay no attention to the person with the hawk in her avatar...

Selene,
Don't you have a side column with smilies? Maybe there's some other option that doesn't show them? (duh.. I didn't scroll your pic over far enough to see you have it on the right. If you make your window narrower, does your smilies column get longer?)

Another way to fix the wasted space issue may be to put fewer smilies on the front reply/pm page so that there are not more than 15 rows worth (looks like approx 6 rows of smilies) regardless of the width of the smilies column.

Or, if you get to that set-up, make the column width a fixed width. Of course all of that depends on being able to get to the php that sets up the page!

Yes. the length of that space is variable (as you can see per my attachment showing how it looks in Safari 3/Mac with a wider browser window). There is still some wasted space but not quite as much. ...and you know, I just noticed, the text entry box is resizable on some browsers.

Which browsers, John (I am using Safari 2)

To get the appearance Selene shows, I have to increase the width to a full 1680 on my laptop. And, I like a browser window about 950 pixels.

Well, I've confirmed Safari 3 will let you resize :wink: (The mac version anyway, I assume the Windows version too). Not sure yet about any others but I had a forum user previously mention it and I didn't understand what they were talking about at the time, it may have been FireFox.

The shot of mine above was with a 1024 window for reference.

I'd try the file "posting_editor.html" in the directory "styles/prosilver/template"

There, find this code:
Code: Select all
        <div id="message-box">
                <textarea <!-- IF S_UCP_ACTION and not S_PRIVMSGS and not S_EDIT_DRAFT -->name="signature" id="signature" style="height: 9em;"<!-- ELSE -->name="message" id="message"<!-- ENDIF --> rows="15" cols="76" tabindex="3" onselect="storeCaret(this);" onclick="storeCaret(this);" onkeyup="storeCaret(this);" class="inputbox">{MESSAGE}{DRAFT_MESSAGE}{SIGNATURE}</textarea>
        </div>

and change the value in "rows" in the textarea tag.

I didn't try it myself, though, so this is just an almost random guess.

good luck,

That sounds like a very good guess to me! :D
