Twig, I really think only the Brits would understand fish,chips and mushy peas covered in vinegar. It was even better in the days when they came wrapped in old newspapers and the ink mixed with the vinegar

Did I hear Fish and Chips somewhere??? Please - I haven't had them for ages, and I am missing it. I had friends up here and have been left with lots and lots of veggies, so currently, I am on a healthy diet of broccoli casserole, Chinese stir-fry and similar. Fatty fish and chips sound like heaven. And I have to attest to the fact that mushy peas are to die for: I never had them until I came to the UK, and was very sceptical at first, but now I prefer them to the normal peas.... I just cannot stomach the vinegar - now that is British tastelessness at its best

On a good note: I have finished that d*** essay - thanks to all the people who have promised to review it. So now I am studying the secrets of the rocks..... First exam is in 6 weeks.

And BTW: I am off lent - anybody care to offer me a ???

Thanx, Pangurban, I am surprised that a cat would actually hand out alcohol - mine consider it an insult to their sensitive noses and tend to leave when I take out the Whisky.

And yes, British Tastelessness is unsurpassed, at least as far as food is concerned... I had an English friend who was married to a Spanish Guy, and whenever we visited, we hoped she would cook Spanish food. It insulted her greatly, to say the least. OTOH, I must admit that as far as dessert is concerned, British food is great - it is just the main courses

I can't help with the inscription, but I believe I saw a similar bowl on the Antiques Roadshow a few weeks ago. There was also some writing on the bottom of the bowl which read
