Signature block standards

Postby Selene » 01 May 2008, 20:06

Just a reminder to everyone to please keep in mind our standards for the contents of your sig blocks. Images should be no taller than 100 pixels and no wider than 300 pixels (right-click the image and select Properties to check an image's size).

Large images take time to load over slow connections, so please respect the limitations of those board members who are on dial-up connections and/or must pay a per-minute charge for Internet use. It is easy to avoid opening a thread that obviously is going to contain photos, but large images in sigs can be anywhere and everywhere.

Please use a photo editing program to resize your images if they are over sized. If you need help, post a request in Q&A; many of our members are proficient at this and someone can probably assist you in getting your sig images into compliance.

Click here to review the full sig block standards.

Thanks,
Selene

Selene, if we cannot link an image from our own website, where do I upload it ?

Hi, Lily,

Good point. I have amended the standards as follows:
No hotlinking directly to images on other people's web sites! (Linking to your own, or to images on photo sharing web sites, is permissible)

Thanks for pointing that out; it's not bandwidth theft if it's your own bandwidth or that of a company that provides it as a service.

Eggs are fine! The dragon site intends for people to post their eggs/dragons in sigs, so that's in keeping with our rules.

Thanks for that too Selene. I must admit - I saw others with their eggs in their sigs and just assumed it was OK. I'm relieved to hear that it is indeed alright. They're fun

I was just wondering whether the scrolls that they have on the dragon site are alright? Mine is generated through ImageShack, but I'm not sure how large it is.....

Save the scroll to your computer, then right-click the file and look at its Properties. You should be able to see the dimensions and the file size there. They look kind of large, to me, but I haven't checked to see if they're within the guidelines. If they are and you want to use one, go for it! Or, alternatively, photoshop it to size and use the edited image, assuming the Dragon Cave doesn't have any restrictions on modification of their art. I haven't checked that, either.

Thanks Selene, I'll have a think about that, though on reflection the sig here is probably better with just eggs and babies

My incubator fit, but it just seemed large... I nixed it and put a link to my scroll instead. I may add my adults back... I like the white one in particular. :)

The incubators are really large—too large, if we strictly enforced these standards, but the limits can't be applied automatically through the board settings without causing some unintended consequences (a glitch, no doubt, but I don't know what we can do about it) and I don't have time to hunt down and contact everyone who's got an oversized sig image and ask them to revise it.

So is that a problem? No idea—I'm on broadband, as, I suspect a lot of us are. I hope anyone with a slow Internet connection who is seriously inconvenienced by the size of the sig blocks will let us know, but I haven't had any complaints so far.

So for the moment let's assume the eggs and a few adults are OK, as are the majority of other images people have in their sigs—we want people to be able to express themselves and have some fun, too. But let's all try keep our sigs reasonably close to the guidelines—since sigs show in every post we make (unless we click off the "attach a signature" box when composing our posts), large images can add a lot of vertical space to threads and potentially impact people on dial-up.

Greetings Selene and all,
To help those who have slower internet connections and servers, this board offers a way to remove all pictures and load the board with just text, and is simple.

Go to the "User control Panel "(upper left of the page, under the banner) then; Board Preferences, Then; Edit Display Options.
You will get this page;

Here you can select what is showing up on your computer and save lots of time browsing.
It allows you to remove avatars, signatures and all, and can be switched back if you like.

Of course sanity in posting pictures is a must, for all of us, but this can help speed things up

I guess the easiest way for me to see if I am in compliance, is to post here, and see what it looks like!

Yup, it looks to be acceptable.
