Freecycle

Postby Tynan Elder Oak » 30 Apr 2008, 14:23

I think it would be really great if we could start a version of freecycle on our site, for OBOD's .

Essentially for those who don't know about it, freecycle enables you to post an offer or wanted add on the web, offering items that you no longer require or asking for items needed / wanted.

No money exchanges hands, except perhaps postage if this agreed between the people emailing each other.

No animals are offered or commercial sites promoted ... it is simply for the recycling of goods rather than dumping them.

One persons excess/junk is anothers treasure or desire.....

It could be an interesting project, and possibly one would have to consider the logistics of different countries etc but surely it is do-able?

It would be interesting to try, but one of the things that makes Freecycle work is that it's organised on a local level. So people are able to physically drop off or pick up items without having to go too far.

Having said that I did pass on a book a couple of years ago to someone on the board, I thought he was more in need of it than I, so it might just work!

I like this idea, it would make it a lot easier to obtain things that we needed without having to search websites and shops for them. =)

It would probably depend on what we offer - if it is something heavy or bulky the postage may exceed the value, and I would rather offer it locally. Smaller or specific druidic things - why not?

A lot depends on distance and how far someone is willing to travel to pick up.

How about organising in local areas?

i.e. have it shown by city, and only items in a, say, 30-40 mile radius of that hub to be posted?

Freecycle: London
Freecycle: Nottingham
and so on?

I think that is a workable idea... and a potential way of meeting other obodies that one might not otherwise meet, especially if you are unable as we are to get to the camps etc....
