Hi fellow animal lovers,

I've just joined and started my Bardic journey, but since aninmals are so important to me, this had to be nearly the first place I stopped to read, and now to post.

I thought since this photo thread hadn't had a new pic in awhile that it might be nice to post my beasties for you to enjoy.

This is Possum. She is a retired polocrosse pony. She is only eleven but has bad arthritis in one knee from her years of hard riding. (Not by me!)



This is Cyrano de Purgerac being funny with me. He is a rescue kitty and such a character.



These are our two German Wirehared Pointers, Buffy and Tam.



This is our newest baby, Rosie. She is now a few months older than in this pic, but it sums up her attitude pretty well. It's ALL about her!

This is Minnie, my Mom's cat that came to live with us after she passed away, she was part of my inheritance! And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Wow, you all live with such beautiful and wonderful animals.

These are the ones living with us:
Both of them are girls :P And they live in different parts of our house, as I'm sure Hada (the dog) wouldn't get on with the cat at all.

We don't know Bola de pelo's (Hairy ball, that's what I call her, but she doesn't pay attention at any name you can call her) age. She's been with us for more than a year, but she comes and goes wherever and whenever she wants to (she's a stray cat wanting to be taken cared of, without losing her freedom )

Hada (faery) will be 6 in November. She's such a crazy girl and she loves eating everything. And when I say everything, I mean it She's got a strong bond with my granny, they love each other a lot so when my granny pops in, she barks and moan the whole day until she gets her attention :P!

Each and every one of them is a complete nut for their own individual and strange reasons. But it helps them a lot to feel home in our family.
We also have chicken, I need to take some pictures, they are Pekin Bantam, chinese dwarf chicken, very cute but have a heart of steel and don't even blink an eye whenever the husky would come over them like a hurricane... forgetting about the fence.

I thought you might like to meet our new rescue dog, her name is now Willow and she's one year old and seems to have had a bad start in life as she is terrified of everything, we brought her home today and she has attached herself to me and follows me everywhere. If we move towards her too quickly she winces as though she is expecting to be hit. She is very gentle and I think has the makings of a wonderful companion.

Hi Flidais!

You new companion does indeed look like a very gentle and fragile little soul. She does not necessarily need to have been mistreated in the past (although of course it is possible), but often dogs behave like that out of instinct and out of lack of experience. There is this very sensitive phase in canines where they act explorative and curious between three and six months basically and during that time they would easily accept any new influence like tall people, cows, cats, bangs, cars, planes, trains - whetever you can think of. When this window in development closes, usually around the 6th month or sometimes earlier or later, the dog so to speak "closes his file" of things in life to be recognised and explored.
This is also the time when the dog makes deep bonds with his pack and will be careful rather than curious and explorative. Most things the dog hasn't got to know by then, he will be afraid of or at least insecure when exposed to it, like he would not know how to handle it. When the dog's temperament is rather strong, he will still learn how to explore them. But if the dog is rather fragile like yours you may have to teach her gradually how to handle new experiences.

I have had a couple of dogs like these and I have been working with them for quite some time now, since I'm a dog behaviour "counsellor" and biologist. So if you ever need any help or have questions I would be glad to help with some inspirations.

It can be very rewarding to gradually see one of these creatures gain confidence and become normal (meaning: the usual crazy) dogs. I wish you all the best of luck and success with her!

Thank you so much for that information it has helped me have a different perspective. Last night was her first night with us and this morning we found she had gone around the house collecting all sorts of things and left them in her basket and had done to huge 'poo's' on the floor, she hasn't done any wee's or poos outside in the garden or on walks as yet, but we love her anyway and she'll learn in time

Bran-Raeven, I love your babies! I think that the tri collies are so handsome.

Hi Flidais, hopefully your girl has settled in a bit by now. i think at first they wee and such on the floor because in concrete runs at a shelter that is where they have to go, so they get kind of reverse house-trained.

How does everyone feel about Cesar Milan? I have been watching a bit of his show and he seems to think that if we spend too much time fussing over a new nervous rescue dog, we fix in the mind that being nervous is good. I am sure some of his leadership techniques help my with my bossy GWPs, who are much calmer as a result, but was wondering if anyone has tried his stuff with a rescue?

Greymore, are your guys all Irish Terriers? Even thogh they are very rare in Oz, we have a breeder near us so got to see a few at our local dog training club. They seem very nice dogs, and as merry as they are said to be!
