Protect the trees - educating people

Postby illion » 16 Sep 2008, 07:25

I wrote in another post that my neighbours are crazy about cutting trees down. I live in an area in the forest, which was established in the early 80s. It is a very nice place, with nature gardens. We have pines, heather and blueberries in them. It`s become a trend here lately to cut down all the pines around here. The reasons are that they don`t let the sun through to people`s verandas and that their making a mess in people`s driveways and on the roofs. Well, I love my pines. I`ve planted more of them. I guess I have app. 50-60 of them in different sizes,I guess I have to count them one day. Some of them are small dwarfspecies... I like the smell, the clean air they produce, and the shadow on the really hot days of summer. I also like to plant flowers at their feet, that can climb up their stems. I don`t care about the needles they drop on my driveway, and I have no problem with my roof either. I actually think it`s nice

Well, to retell how all this started.. One of my neighbours have been nattering for years, he wanted us to cut down three of our old pines. We didn`t do it. One spring we found that these three trees got browner and browner and died. To me it could seem like he had poisoned their roots. We had to cut them down

Another neighbour dropped by the other day, and wanted us to cut down two other old pines, because of shadow on their veranda. I`m worried. Do we have to take them down? Is it worth going into war with one more neighbour? I think this is so sad.

Then I decided to try to educate people so that they see the value in protecting our trees. I`ve started with translating some of the booklet I received from OBOD about the Planting Programme, and posted it on Facebook and on other forums, that I frequent. I`m thinking of printing them and putting them in people`s mailboxes.

Any other ideas to how I can educate people will be received with great thanks
I`ve read a few other threads here, but they were about saving trees we knew was in danger, my project will be more geared towards preventing efforts.

Thank you all for reading :warm:
