For soldiers and policeman shot in Northern Ireland

Postby Beith » 10 Mar 2009, 04:50

I'd just like to spare a few thoughts and a prayer for the souls of the two young soldiers shot on Saturday night and the policeman shot last night, in Northern Ireland; and for their families and friends reeling in shock and grief.

Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimakar were the two young men shot on Saturday. They were only 23 and 21 years old respectively. Two other soldiers and two young men making a delivery to the army base were also injured in that attack. Last night, a policeman was shot dead as he and a colleague went to investigate some activity at a school. The dead man has not yet been named.
It seems that dissident republican terrorists claimed responsibilty for the soldiers' deaths. It's not unlikely that they too are behind last night's attack.

Northern Ireland has had its fair share of troubles for the last 40 years but since power-sharing implemented some years ago, so much progress has been made. No one wants a return to sectarian violence and these are absolutely horrific and barbaric attacks done with abject cowardice and malice by madmen who speak for no-one's but their own twisted ideology.

We in Ireland absolutely condemn these attacks. They are not carried out in our name. The people who perpetrate them deserve the full weight of justice - and please God they'll be caught and given it in measure for what they have done. It won't help those who died, nor their grieving families and friends, but there needs to be full sanction against people who do such things.

Rest in peace Mark, Patrick and the Policeman shot tonight. Our hearts go out to you and your families and friends.

Yes it is tremendously sad, for everyone in Northern Ireland and of course for the families of the soldiers and the policeman.

I've been within 200 yards of two IRA bombs and I'm not looking forward to a return of those days where little children get blown up in English shopping centres. All because some bastard aristocrats forced my ancestors through economic and political oppression to go and fight your ancestors. Lets hope they manage to put a lid on this.

If you sigh we hear you
If you weep we weep
In your hour of gladness
How our pulses leap
Ireland Mother ireland
let what will befall
Ever shall we hold you
Dearest... best of all!

May there be peace in the west...

Dear all,

Thank you for your posts and especially Wyeuro for that beautiful little poem - go raibh maith agat.

The policeman's name as Stephen Carroll. Rest in peace.

I am happy to say that thousands upon thousands turned out on the streets of Belfast, Newry, Lisburn and other places to protest this atrocity and to refute all attempts by terrorists to destabilize the peace process. People are united in their shock and outrage that this should happen.

As you say Corwen, hopefully they manage to "put a lid on it". Peace has been very hard won in Northern Ireland. I'm very sorry for your experiences in the past - thank God they were near misses. I hope the days of bombs and guns will be behind us again and that this is a "blip" on the radar due to the power-struggles within groups with a dying ideology. Here's hoping the perpetrators will be caught and punished and that the will of the people of Ireland - north and south - will over-ride any further attempts to throw peace off its course.

Blessings upon all of you - thank you for your thoughts here and beyond. Sometimes you look at the world and you wonder why so much unrest. As I write this I read that there have been massacres in Germany and USA with gunmen shooting innocent people. You just wonder why? and pray for an end to such things. If only....

Síochán linn agus tríd an domhain - peace be with us and throughout the world

Oh, I should have mentioned that the lyrics were from a song that John McCormack sang. P J O'Reilly wrote it. You can download it for free here: http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=113 ... er+Ireland
