Beowulf--in the original Anglo-Saxon! :boggle:

Actually, it's for a wonderful course I'm taking which combines Seamus Heaney's translation with a crash course in Old English.

I lke Seamus Heaney too, though I prefererred the Tolkien translation (which is meant to be re-issued sometime soon as its only to be found in a few libraries at present).

I saw this grapic novel version in a bookshop in Frome the other day, and it looked really good, so I ordered a copy from somewhere cheaper. Perhaps I'll post a potted review here if anyone is interested.

What am I reading at the moment?

I'm up to the last 30 odd pages of The Outlaws of Sherwood by Robin McKinley. I really quite enjoyed it, even though there was a chunk where the story dulled right down. Overall, a good adaption of the traditional tale.

I've also just starting rereading Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell for the fourth time. Even though the racism annoys me more and more, it's still a strong story with some of my all-time favourite characters, such as Melanie Wilkes.

As for non-fiction I'm reading Passionate Marriage by David Schnarch. It's a book about keeping your sex live sizzling well into your marriage. I find the author babbles a bit but he makes some good points at the same time.

Just finished that one a few weeks ago!
Nice book, and alot of wisdom in it as well.
Started again on Ecoshamanism by James Endredy now, recently I need to read in sections because of education again. (And anatomy is a pain...)

Heaney does a great job with the poetics (A-S poetry is absolutely beautiful in its alliteration IMO) but his translation is pretty rough. (which, to his credit, at least he admits to :) ) I have a photostated copy (does that date it?) of Tolkien's trans. I like it best - although he was a linguist/philologist like I am. I monkey around with transliterating Beowulf myself - I am on about line 420.

I am currently reading:
Fiction: various works by J.R.R. Tolkien simultaneously. (Studying the ardalambion)
Non-fiction: A Manual of Sumerian Grammar and Texts, John L. Hayes. and Team of Rivals by Doris Goodwin Kearns.

Hi Otter Oonagh,
I loved the Way of Weird when I read it, Brian has his own web site under Way of Wyrd' which is very interesting and worth a look. Can I also recommend his Discovering the Real Middle Earth".

Sputnik Sweetheart by Murakami ~ I'm loving Japanese ficiton at the moment with all it's references to Shinto and the way that narratives seem to be expereinced through the senses.

Also revisiting lots of Larkin poetry ~ I feel he had a wonderfully pastoral voice, but I can't find a single academic who agrees with me!

I can't laugh, Tynan...I literally inhaled the series after frowning upon it. It could use some editing, but the series is fantastic -- and much better than the movie as usual.

I'm reading Turbotax's guide on how not to get audited by the IRS, The Unforgiving Minute by Craig Mullaney (thanks to Jon Stewart), You Being Beautiful by Dr. Oz, Journey Through Womanhood by Tian Dayton...among other half-read books on writing and of course my stack of Spirituality & Health magazines.
