The Hawk and Willow Seed Group planted an Oak Tree this year for Earth Day. What did you or will you be doing for Earth Day this year? Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22!

Earth Day was, rather, a culmination day for us. Our little project began about a month ago when I scraped the grass from a 30X30 ft. area and tilled it 3 times, added manure/compost mix and tilled it again. We let it sit for a while and accept rain water (little choice there) then I spread 12-12-12 fertilizer and tilled it in. On the 22nd we had 2 dumptruck loads of topsoil, which had been scraped from a farm field, delivered and we mixed it into our soil with the tiller, then we took the hoes and formed our rows. We planned our plant choices and locations, then went to a couple of garden centers, this is what we ended up with..... 12 spinach, 12 slicing tomato, 12 cherry tomato, 8 cucumber, 12 sweet pepper, 6 broccoli, 3 sage, 3 sweet basil, 3 oregano, 3 cilantro, 4 water mellon, 2 canteloupe,7 garlic, and 100 cubic ft. of mulch. Previously I had picked up some posts and wire fencing so that we can discourage deer and rabbits from enjoying our produce before it's ready . Today I'm going to put some finishing touches on the fence, set pinwheels in the ground (crows despise pin wheels) then prepare the perimeter of the garden for marigolds, rabbits don't much care for marigold and will avoid it.
What was really nice was the butterflies that came to visit while we were watering the freshly planted and mulched plot, a yellow one danced around the sprinkler, a couple of sky blue came in for a look, as well as others. There is promise of rain today, I hope that it comes in perfect measure.
