Lots and lots of water, food and sunlight I'd guess - I grow squash and pumpkins (badly most of the time) and that's what they need.

So get some good compost, enrich it if you can with fertiliser - apparentrly chicken manure is great, and make sure you water it generously. Being Floridan I don't think you'll be lacking sun or heat like we do here in England.
Most dear is fire to the sons of men,
most sweet the sight of the sun;
good is health if one can but keep it,
and to live a life without shame. (Havamal 68)

My in-laws live in Englewood Fl. and my father-in-law uses fish parts in his garden, with pretty good result, maybe you can find some fish emultion to feed your plants with. I have used composted manure from Lowes, it has alot of good organic stuff in it too.

What part of Florida do you live in?

It is possible to grow melons in Florida. I grew some cantaloupe several years ago in a place that clearly should not have produced anything lol.
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears, Looms but the Horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
