Allottment herb bed.

Postby Draziwekans » 05 May 2010, 16:18

Well this year has seen a bit of progress on the allottment patch we secured, abeit almost a just get it in approach, while more long term plans are thought about. The herb patch and bench of rest has had a little more thought though.

I love your herb bed. I grow my herbs amongst the fruit trees and bushes on my plot. I grew chamile for the first time this year. The german plant which grows tall. It is beautiful and I have enough dried flower heads now to sleep easy.

I have a camping stove in my shed and drink fresh herb tea in between digging and planting. Since putting down some recycled slabs outside my shed the tea breaks have got longer!

I have only just wander into this part of the message board. wonderful I love reading about talking about plants, trees, growing things......wildlife.....does any one use the Druid Plant Oracle?

The allotment is still reletively new so lots of work still, but hopefully our first harvest this year. We are in need and yet to sort out a shed. The herbs have done well and we have let them flower this year, the pent needs to be redifined.

A shed is essential for those showery days and cold days in winter, also to get shade in summer. My shed has no windows but double doors which makes it open to sit in and meditate. Do not know where you live but I looked on Free Recycle for a shed (UK). www.freerecycling.co.uk.

My allotment was like yours covered in grass and brambles but now three years on most of it is dug but the tussle with weeds never ends. I had a lazy week last week so I have some hard work ahead over this weekend. I will also be planting out my leeks which I grow in large pots until I have space to plant them and for the cabbage white butterflies some kale and cabages.... also grown in pots in a at home.

blessings on your progress.

Did you say Leeks for the cabbage white butterflies?.
I have grown black Kale and Broccolli, whch bird and insect alike seem to like, currently trying a bit of netting on them. I have grown cauliflower from seed which I've just put in, again trying to protect with a bit of net.
Freecycle is a great resource, - I got rid of a large metal shed on there once, but we havent been lucky in one coming up yet.

Hi Draziwekans

The leeks seem to be pest free it was cabbages and kale - last year the grew beautifully then high winds pulled of the netting off and I had stalks with a few holes. They recovered and then my site was flooded from October on followed by ice and snow and they expired. but that is nature.

My shed came from B&Q it cost about £140. Like you I could not find one on free recycle. Since I have seen at least two and a greenhouse.
