First we have expressed a strong intention to have and maintain harmony in our house, not just for us, but for everybody who enters.
With that intention, and lots of other good wishes, we have cleansed every room like you would do in a ritual. We smudged the place with sage, blessed it with fire and water.
Then we added 'content' for the atmosphere that we want to create, making it very much OUR atmosphere. We are both druids with strong shamanic tendencies, so our house looks more like a shamanic cave than a house. (animal skins on the sofa, antlers, herbs, dries mushrooms on the wall, the may queen's spear in a corner, stuff like that ;-)). The central hearth is the focal point, where we make a fire or light incense on a altar.
We have payed specific attention to what we call 'house spirits'. We created little shelters for them, and little altars. Every time some woodwork creaks or moans, or a door opens and closes by itself, something unexpected happens, we laugh and welcome the 'house spirits'. This creates a light atmosphere or harmony that everybody who visits us pics up instantly. We did the same in the garden. We burn candles and incense daily to keep ourselves and our imaginary friends happy and to affirm the intention of harmony ;-).
Some people pick up 'bad vibes' and negativity from others, and from situations in general. If you are sensitive to that it you can bring it home and interprete every little strange event or sound or feeling as negative, depressing yourself and your place even more.
By consciously creating a positive interpretation of all those events, you create a positive magical intent. And everytime something 'happens' in that sense it is an affirmation of that positive intent. That way you can magically 'cleans' your house into a place of good vibes.
At least that is how it works for us.
HA HA yeah sorry for the witch speak I've only been on the druid path for a year so im still missing quite a lot of lingo

I really like yout account of the house spirits so maybe i should pay a little more attention to them

Works fine for me.
I think it's a very nice thing you do very similiar to what do atm in fact

An normally that works just fine too
