The White Goddess by graves : 'a Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth', and J.Matthews 'Taliesin',!
Graves is difficult to understand but worth the treck and Matthews is so informative on an otherwise elusive (literary) subject!

I was looking at that book on Amazon a couple of days ago and couldn't decide whether to buy it or not. Would you recommend it? I'm very much a novice...

I've only just begun it, so I've read only about 15 pages, but I am enjoying it so far. The introduction hooked me in straight away.

Greetings to all
What a great place to get reading ideas!
I have read different kinds of books depending on my mood (do I want to escape....) with some of my favorites being Tolkien (of course), Jim Butcher (not only the Dresden files but his Codex Alera series) and Kim Harrison. As you can see, I mostly like to escape. :)

Right now though I am reading The Mount Haemus Lectures put together by OBOD. What a great way to read about the history of Druidry & OBOD as well. I thought it might be dry but it really isn't. It actually has made me laugh out loud a few times (when was the last time you got a chuckle out of a lecture?) I'd recommend it to all OBODies.

Blessings & happy reading!

Based on recommendations on this board, I finally got 'Over Nine Waves' and the Mabinogion; I'm so wallowing in it, it's awesome to rediscover the mythology instead of trying to remember hazy childhood stories from my grandmother. :cloud9:

And I'm also reading a FABULOUS book called 'The Hand-Sculpted House: a Practical and Philosophical Guide to Building a Cob Cottage' by Ianto Evans, Michael G. Smith, and Linda Smiley. We're building our home in the next couple of years, starting when it's warm again - so now is the time for planning, and this is a HUGE resource. I'll try to take photos and start a thread once we actually begin construction. Or I'll take photos in the next few days when we use the posthole digger to do initial foundation-site testing. I'm so excited about it!!!

All this in between my OBOD course work and *mostly* my nursing coursework. :)

Greetings,

I just found a copy of Phantastes by George Mac Donald. HIGHLY recommended to anyone working with faery lore, readers of R.J. Stewart's work, lovers of the earliest "fantasy", folks interested in metaphysics. This was written one hundred years before Tolkein's work.

Either it is the root of many latter author's works, steeped in very knowledgeable folklore, or from some type of direct experience. Either way, it is not only a psychological drama of catharsis, but extremely insightful.

Worthy read for OBOD members.

Awen,

I mentioned to a psychic friend that I was becoming fascinated with Merlin, and he lent me a copy of the book "The Crystal Cave" by Mary Stewart. I've just started it but it's already gripping me.

Anyone read that?

I'll let you know when I've finished it.

I've just completed the book "the sudden dawn" by Goran Powell. A fictional/historical story of the buddhist monk Boddiharma(Dharma) who became known as the patron saint of martial artists.Very good.

I've just finished Gilbert's Eat, pray, love which was a great and enjoyable surprise.
Currently I'm wrestling with Thackeray's Vanity Fair, something I've so far been avoiding, but have suddenly found interesting.

Ah, I read those books back when I was a teenager & I loved them. You've given me the urge to read them again! How did you like the book?
I've gone back to another set of books that I read many years ago....The "Sword of Shannara" Trilogy by Terry Brooks which is what I'm reading now.

Just taken delivery of "The Path of the Blue Raven" by Mark Townsend. I read the first eighty pages yesterday. I am totally hooked on this book. It is one that will stay on my bookshelves and be read again and again. Also I have "Living Druidry" by Emma Restell Orr, I haven't started it yet but it has been on my wish list for months so I took the plunge and bought it. They were both delivered within 24 hrs too! Good ol' Amazon.. :tiphat:
