census 2011

Postby Cwm » 12 Dec 2010, 20:50

I would like to urge everyone to write Pagan-(followed by spiritual path) on the census in 2011 so eg pagan-druid, pagan-wicca, etc This would mean that all pagans are counted as one group. It is time for pagans to stand up and be properly counted. Further info from Druid Network site and if you want to spread the word to your groups/moots et al then contact:- admin@pagandash.org

For those interested, more info here: http://druidnetwork.org/community/pagandash

If I understand this well, it's only about the UK, isn't it?
Or do you think it could be applied to other countries as well?
I am not young enough to know everything. (O.W.)

I heard it was more important to just simply put Pagan rather than your specific path as it will confuse(?!) the census counters.

It would be best to ask your nation's government what form of identification is easiest for them to sort.
In May of 2011 Canada will also be holding a nation-wide census. You're only allowed to identify one religion, so I imagine people will be abusing the hyphen here too.

In some countries, like France and the US, it's illegal for the government to ask questions about religion on the census.

Yes this is the UK census on March 27th.

The last one in 2001 showed Pagans as the 7th largest faith community in the UK. However previous estimates of how many of there are came up with a figure about the same as the number of Hindus who were the fith largest faith community according to the census. If we stand to be counted together this time and we all, or even mostly, put Pagan down I think we could move up the rankings with potentially signficant effects on how we are regarded and treated by the UK government. So if you are in the UK please do put your religion down as Pagan followed by your path if you like. Since censuses are likely to be abolshed here this may be our last chance to be counted in this way.
