This forum is dedicated to the quest of our common humanity, especially in the exploration of the underlying commonalities of the human condition, the similarities between faith systems and philosophies, and the Druidic search for all that unifies rather than divides. This is a public forum, viewable by guests as well as members, and is cataloged by most search engines.

The term "Common Quest" does not mean that ultimately there is one faith system, or one lowest common denominator. It means that we are all trying to do the same thing: find the meaning of our existence in this common humanity that we share.

The reason there is no conflict here, is that OBOD Druidry has been set up to integrate into other faiths, to be synthetic, and to welcome a multi-faith aspect. It was set up more as a spiritual path. It's founder, was a Christian Druid.

The reason why there is a lot hate for Christian Druids here, is because there is simply a lot of haters on the board. It's their issue, Not OBODs and Not Druidry.

The hate says more about them, than about Christianity.

Greetings,

Mind if i join the convesation?

Well, not many people in Asia will move to a "western" culture thus true.
Reason being asia is still very deeply infuse with their own mystic and spiritual believes.
eg. china. india. thailand. malaysia. japan.
Travelers to asian countries, when you visit at the right time, you'll notice it.
So there's really not much point in exploring other religons. At least thats for the elders.

Those who explore "western" earth-faith is, well, sad to say, "buffy the vampireslayer" or "Charm" fans. (who put those bunnies in their heads really! )
But amongst the younger generation, there are those who really feel the "gap". Like "theres surely more then just what our parents teaches us." kinda thinking.
Thus we move out of our "asian" sphere.
As for me, i'm not sure truth be told. I'm a strange one. Been spirited away at a very young age and the spirits teaches me things. Creepy. :duck:

My parents are buddist and taoist. I've been educated in christian schools for like 7 years. Kinda weird i know but thanks to that i nurtured a love for different religons folklore or "history".
Though i sometimes do get into fights with fathers and priest. lol.

Blessings. / l \

Postby Garan Gwyn » 27 Apr 2011, 17:18

Hi All,

I came here to the forums in the hopes that someone might be able to assist me with something. I'm not sure how much of the details I need to post publicly, but basically, I am looking for someone who has some knowledge and experience of the path of a boddhisatva. I need some guidance.

I have long had strong Buddhist tendencies, but like Donata (one of my heroines! :yay: ) since druidry found me, I have always resonated strongly with this path, no doubt due at least in part to it being nature-based, whereas Buddhism is not a nature-based spirituality.

Yet I find myself at the same time being directed towards the path of a boddhisatva -- whether or not I consciously want to go there! I really don't want to leave my druid studies to delve into Buddhism; at the same time, my Ovate tutor does not seem to have anything to say about my deep personal experiences relating to the path of compassionate service.

This weekend I had another profound experience which took me to the next lesson on this alternate path. I am hoping that somebody here knows what I am talking about and can either let me know here, or send me a PM or an email so that I can get some feedback about what has been going on with me.

Thanks to all in the Order for their encouragement and support!

Have you read "The Way of the Bodhisattva"? There are several versions of it available and the Dalai Lama also has a text available about it. Perhaps start by reading this-it will help you decide on your path. As you can see from my previous post in this forum, I follow both paths and have no problem with it.

Brigantia,

I have not read this book -- but I will now, thank you! In fact, I had not really read anything much on Buddhism up until recently, when I read a wonderful book entitled, "The Lost art of Compassion: Discovering the Practice of Happiness in the Meeting of Buddhism and Psychology" by Lorne Ladner, Ph.D -- a Western clinical psychologist who is also a Tibetan Buddhist.

I had a dream several years ago about Quan Yin, whom I knew little about, but I stumbled over a brief story about her while researching something else (which I can't even remember now!) In the dream, I was being led by a female guide in a kind of museum, and was shown an ornate carriage that belonged to Quan Yin's father -- and next to that was an altar with red velvet background, empty except for a faint impression where Quan Yin used to sit. I began to weep bitterly for her demise, and was told that Quan Yin needed to be returned to her place.

That was the beginning of the clues that have been leading me along this path. I did, at one point, look up some information about the path of the bodhisattva, but while I felt that compassion was indeed needed in the world, it didn't sound like a path I wanted to embark upon. However, it seems the gods may have other plans for me.

I do think that Buids (love the term!) are probably the minority, as you have said -- but in reading your earlier post, I see that we have much in common. My love for nature is precisely what "hooked" me about druidry, and was one of the things that I felt was missing from what I had read about the various Buddhist traditions.

It is not that I am averse to studying Buddhism -- it is just that I can't handle more than one course of study at a time. :???: I hate to abandon Druidry in the middle of my Ovate grade but I also cannot ignore the synchronistic and profound messages I am being given.

I will look for this information. Thank you -- you have been very helpful, as have others on this thread. I am not feeling that I am alone in uncharted water as much now.

Bendithion,

You mean her?

Well, almost every chinese household in singapore worship her. My family included.
The only thing to add about the worship of her is a strict NO BEEF diet. Not sure why, my grandmother almost beat me half to death when she found out I ate beef.
Not much on the compassion side. lol. But thats just typical chinese house "education". :old:

I only know of the thousand arms story, there are others but i'm not sure about them.

May Guan Yin's eyes and heart be ever upon you.

Why would that be?

A lot of what is said about the Celts comes from Celtic Christian. They are quite close to the Celtic Druids as they have them described.

I think it is not weird at all.

Yes, Ebelaar. I have a beautiful marble Guan Yin (Quan Yin, Kwan Yin, Kannon...so many versions) on an altar in my bedroom. I am certain it is she that often teaches me, sending me enlightenment and understanding when I am wrestling with a very difficult question (i.e. Does "evil" really exist in the world?) Thank you.

Lily...I thank you for the link about beef...will go there & read it. Haven't been instructed as to this yet. So far most of what I know of the bodhisattva path has been directly "downloaded", then I have something I have to go look up. :D

Hi Ebelaar! When I was exploring Buddhism, this obsession with vegetarianism is what really put me off the Chinese versions of Buddhism. The Chinese Buddhists for some reasons are the vegetarians of the Buddhist world. And yet Buddha was not a vegetarian.

It's definitely cultural.

Greetings sir Davin,

Agreed, Its definitely a cultural thingy.

I believe some people have notice this. Sometimes you see monks standing around the corner in the city deep in their meditaiton, with one hand holding a bowl.
Whats the bowl for? its to collect offerings, not money but food. (when going into a deep mediation like theirs for hours on end, it'll really leave a person very hungry.)
They will accept any kind of food that is given to them, meat included.

They believe that one should not be fussy about what's given to them, but to appreciate what's given to them.
e.g: the kindness in a person's heart.

I know that the Buddhist chefs at one of the retreat centers here in California will cook meat if the guests request it, but otherwise they cook vegetarian. But it is excellent food either way. Whether they eat the meat or not, I don't know.

I'm not a huge meat fan, but I know a lot of druids who couldn't survive without it! I think the most important thing in any case is to be mindful of the life that was given for our nourishment -- whether it be animal or vegetable -- and to be grateful for it and not take it for granted!
