Female Druidhs

Postby diannemorton » 12 May 2011, 00:19

Having just joined the OBOD.. and I mean 'just', like yesterday! after months, nay years of contemplation, I renewed my path of research with vigour.... and came across the term 'Bandrui'. According to the text, these were female Druidhs. Does anyone have any more information on these women?? Seemingly they were revered for there knowledge of the runes, herblore and divination, preparing the dying for a good death and taking responsibility for births. As a Traditional Hedgewitch, I feel they sound a lot like me or am I like they?? I would love to learn more and would welcome any reading list or links....

Yes, I've heard of that term before. Not sure what information there is on them. Good luck in you search.

"Seemingly they were revered for there knowledge of the runes, herblore and divination, preparing the dying for a good death and taking responsibility for births."

This sounds a bit ovatic to me, so maybe there is some cross over between the terms Ovate and Bandrui?

I have not heard the term before. But I do know that there no difference between the male and female druids.

True, in the last couple of throusand years "bandrui" has gone out of fashion. Even "druidess" seems a bit superfluous lol.

Ok, this is perhaps going to sound a bit ridiculous, but I'm getting the sense that you might want to read the Mists of Avalon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mists-Avalon/dp/0140177191/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308407847&sr=8-1) if you haven't already, paying close attention to the characters of Morgaine and Viviane. I say ridiculous because you're asking about history and I'm suggesting historical fiction. However, great fiction contains poetic and mythic truths, and given the dearth of trustworthy writings about the historical druids, you could do a lot worse than starting with the Mists of Avalon. Many people, myself included, have found it immensely inspiring.

Though " Druidess " is still often applied to female druids, there is no differences in their practices that I am aware of. They're still druids.
