Herbalism?

Postby MeadowLark » 07 Jun 2011, 01:24

Hi everyone!

I've been interested in natural medicine and herbs for a long time and have always turned towards natural remedies for common ailments. I always read about wise herbalists in fantasy novels and wished that I could be there apprenticing with them. It's always been something that I have looked to as a far off dream, something that I could never attain. But recently I have been doing some research into herbalism and finding that it's not as far out as I had thought. I will be the first to admit that I currently know next to nothing about herbs or their medicinal properties, but I feel like this is something within me that I need to nurture. I've been thinking about trying to grow or harvest some herbs as that would provide the most hands on learning experience, but I have no idea where to start. And I live on the third floor of an apartment building!

Are there any certified or otherwise experienced herbalists out there that could lend me some advice or insight into this field? I know many of you practice this sort of thing in your daily lives, growing and using herbs medicinally, and that would be wonderful input as well! :)

Some of my information was found here: http://www.alliedhealthworld.com/herbalist.html

Thanks for reading!
Blessings to all!
Alicia

P.S. Also wanted to add, this looks like a wonderful and life changing experience: http://www.moonwiseherbs.com/herbalappr ... ential.htm

Many herbs can easily be grown in pots so if you have a balcony, or even just a window sill, then you can grow plenty. If you want to take it further and you have some space you can grow very good herbs using hydroponics and daylight spectrum lightbulbs.

Personally I would start with some common culinary herbs: most of these also have medicinal uses which you can explore. The taste of fresh herbs which go from plant to plate in minutes is so so much more intense than supermarket ones.

Thx
