Hi guys, hope you're as close to the finish line as I am, or even over it!

My story has fragmented into scenes no longer interlinked, but I had a feeling this might happen as this is the most detailed part of the story where the most interaction with non-established characters happens.

I need some unusual help: I need offensive material - offensive jokes. This should probably be a PM.

What happens in my story is that my character, who wants to be a comedian, tries to win someone over with humour and says something entirely offensive but can't understand why he would react badly to it, since his 'demographic' isn't in the joke. It can't be an anecdote or anything like that, a witty observation, or something? It just needs to flow with the moment, not remove the reader from it. It's an important moment for 'comedy girl', since she becomes aware that what she says might not be to everyone's taste. It needs to be written, but I can't think of the words.

I do hope those that respond to your PM requests asked for your questions in their PM boxes. Otherwise there maybe the risk of such being considered as intrusive, gathering information for personal use,bullying and tactical PMs. Very much the same as I have been recieving lately, insulting and undermining an individual. Also very very arrogant, and an abuse of those facilities. A great advert for Druidry and Paganism.

I don't fully understand your post, but I think you're asking me whether I'm trolling?

I'm not trying to cause offense, and I'm not trying to gather personal information or anything like that: I am truly stuck at a rather nasty, tricky section of my story which is not just comedy, but dealing with 'real societal issues', as opposed to the 'fake' ones . I thought that PMs might be best so that there wasn't anything offensive on display in an open forum, but clearly I'm a bit naive because personal information gathering or the fact that people are using PMs for abuse didn't even occur to me.

I am sorry to find out that you have had to deal with nasty PMs on these boards: rest assured that none of it will come from me. I intend to stick around these boards long after November is over, albeit less overtly.

Edited to add: I've just realised I also asked earlier in this thread about 'unpleasant experiences' at events, naming no names. Thank you, Muddy Fox: you've made me realise how stupid I've been! Now I'll try to curb in my fecklessness before I actually type something that angers people (if I haven't done so already).

I wouldn't say I have received a number of nasty PMs, just a couple that appear to be a comical attempt at veiled threats and subversive information all contained in a childish cryptic style. I have only received those in the last couple of days, I may add.They do resemble your writing style here, and content from those seems to been included in this thread on the same day. What a conicidence! They do not anger me but are more of an irritant.

Thanks to the NaNoWriMo site, I've just found out that speech marks (" ") are counted as a word - one for each mark - by OpenOffice Writer. Guess what program I'm using? This means that my actual word count is between 1,00-2,000 words behind what I thought it was: another day's worth of work. Hope that this warning helps someone - or that you're all using Microsoft Word!

I just want to congratulate everyone on tackling this project. I am lagging a little behind with 44,782 words but I am determined to finish this!
By the way Hairy way to go you are almost there! I am so proud of everyone and glad to be included in this endeavor.

Come on, Julia - you're almost there! 5,300 words and you're done!

Don't forget you need to validate your word count: when you're logged in, go to the 'My NaNoWriMo' tab and select 'Edit Novel Info'. In the 'Novel Info' page it displays your word count and underneath it has in red 'I am ready to validate my novel'. It was never so difficult to find the last two years I did this. If you find your word count comes up a little short and need to write more, don't worry: there is no limit to the number of times you can validate, as long as you do so before the 1st of December.

Keep going everyone: I look forward to doing a lot of novel-reading come December!

Thank you so much for all the encouragement. The past week has been really tough for me. I'll explain about that some other time. Still I got through it with your help.
I still have 1500 words to go so I will validate tomorrow. Funny thing is that I realize now I am only about a third of the way through the story. Maybe I am actually on my way to writing my first full length novel So I'm not sure about letting it be read yet.
Oh yes and congrats to everyone who finished and those who tried. I think the fact we tried is quite impressive.

Wow. mea culpa, I've been totally missing in action from this forum.

I feel really bad because I've really gotten a lot out of this.

I really struggled with the novel I was nanoing and just dragged myself through it at the end. The ironic part is that today, at yoga, I think I found my next novel. Maybe not, but I found a real connection to an opening and a general outline.... who knows. The muses may bless or block but I'm grateful for their gifts to me.

So a big congrats to all the winners here. Thank you HW for your support and leadership. Julia, that is so amazing. 100K? Are you kidding me? Wow.

congratulations all winners. i'm a loser but only in one sense. does anyone ever really 'lose' a nanowrimo event? i'm much the richer for the experience. i couldn't finish for several reasons - too much coming at once, finally resulting in writer's block, farm and social interruptions, work. i panicked for a while because i wasn't writing, but what was happening was probably at least as valuable to me. the story is there in so many different forms, i just couldn't get the right grip on it, but i let it form itself in my mind ready for the next onslaught. i'll probably go on with it before next nano.
