Recipie: Ginger Cold/Cough Reliever

Postby Hairy Woman » 04 Nov 2011, 10:40

Hello, lads and lasses! I have recently been suffering from a nasty cough n' cold. Instead of paying out for expensive medicine, I tried the advice of a friend. It was so effective that I want to share the recipe with you below.

Ingredients:
1 Bulb of ginger
1-2 Litres of water
4 tbsp of sugar

The above is the basic starting point: you can adjust quantities accordingly.

Equipment:
1 Hob/Stove
1 Large saucepan
1 Bowl
1 Grater
1 Tablespoon
1 Mug of personal choice

1. Put water into the saucepan and bring to the boil.
2. Wash the ginger and grate it over the bowl.
3. Add the grated ginger and the yellow 'water' from the ginger to the boiling water.
4. Leave to boil until the water turns yellow.
5. Turn off the heat and leave the ginger to settle at the bottom of the saucepan.
6. After 10-20 minutes, carefully pour the water into the mug. The ginger should not leave the bottom of the saucepan.
7. Making sure that the water is cool enough to drink, taste to find out the strength of the ginger. Water it down as required.
8. To make the drink more syrupy, add sugar. Add lemon if desired.

I used the syrupy version of the directions above. My drink was aout 40% sugar and tasted strongly of ginger, but it was just the ticket after a cold and dry cough which has kept me up the past week. The ginger water can also be used with a teabag to make a more ginger-tasting tea.

Let me know if this helps you too!

*sigh*....I loath ginger. But I will have to tough it out and try it since Ive been looking for natural remedies for colds.
Qur'an 13:2 "And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o’er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider!"

I am not a fan of ginger either, but it really cleared up my airways. You can try adding the ginger water to a flavoured drink to help disguise the taste. For everyone using this recipie, please note that this drink will only relieve the symptoms: it will not cure your cold. Good luck, Islamicelt, and please let us know the results.
