Six Items of Clothing (or less)

Postby Turtle » 12 Sep 2011, 21:18

Hi there,

I stumbled on this challenge on the internet that I find myself returning to andI am thinking of taking on at some point in the near future.

The challenge is to wear only six items of clothes that you already own for an entire month. Some items are excluded from the challenge like underwear, outerwear (coats!), accessories, shoes, work uniforms and anything that you would wear for exercise (but only in that specific context). Also for laundry purposes you can wear multiples of the same item (like two identical white t-shirts or pairs of blue jeans).

Apparently this started as an informal challenge between friends and soon caught on worldwide. People joined for various reasons and got very similar lessons from the challenge.

I guess at this point I am mostly curious. I like limitation as a starting point for creativity and I lean to not wanting to have too many clothes anyway. Although I do donate clothes to good causes on a fairly regular basis, I also own clothes that I have had for over five years. I very gradually shift into fashion, if it stays in style long enough, I eventually end up buying it too. My wardrobe has gone from green and brown to black and grey and then to purple and blue and now it seems I am getting back into the greens and reds again. Hmmmmm ......

I now find myself looking for ways to thrift clothes on the internet rather than buying every item new in the stores; it's amazing what you can find once you get the hang of it.

All in all I am very curious. Has any of you taken part in the Six Items challenge or would you be interested in doing so in the near future. What items would you choose and what would be your motivation for doing so.

Interesting! After a quick mental survey of my wardrobe, it turns out I've been quite unintentionally taking part in this challenge for a very long while now. :D

I've seen this on a few blogs myself, though i'm not quite at the 6 items only mark I have noticed that I do tend to wear the same things over and over while other items in my wardobe I wear very little. Which means i could probably send another lot of stuff to goodwill. Have also started looking into repurposing things and making my own clothes as a lot of ready to wear stuff just never seems to fit right.

Yep, I'm already kinda-sorta doing this. I've got a few identical pairs of jeans and slacks, a few button-down shirts that all have the same style, and that's about it. The only thing I have more of is exercise clothing, which is required for my job. All in all, I care about following sports and fashion with the same amount of enthusiasm - none.

Maybe it is a guy thing....I have a drawer full of black t-shirt, the could easily be 2 black t-shirts...a few pairs of shorts for the summer/pants in the winter, and a couple of green work shirts....I don't change it up much....I have a sports jacket, nice pants and a couple of nice shirts if I am going out....but really, this 6 items thing isn't so much a challenge as a way of life....

Nope. Or I'm a chromosome error. (I've been called that before.)

Outstanding. I finally feel as though the world has caught up to me as I wear the same slacks and shirts regularly

Chromosome error, hah. That's an amusing way of putting it.
I'm pretty much in the same boat though; I have my work uniform sets that double as my leaving-the-house clothes, and then a couple of pairs of pajama pants for lounging about. I've never really put much thought into my wardrobe. Most of my clothes are used when I obtain them; so long as they're comfortable, I'm not picky.

This is me too. I just have a few favourite things that I pretty much wear to death until I find the next item that I really like. I don't believe its a chromosome thing, but just its harder for women to get away with wearing a very limited wardrobe, particularly for work I think.

Yeah, I think I've been doing this, or close, for some time.

Underwear?
