Of course, some wet blankets insist that the ending of a Mayan calendar only means the dawn of a new spiritual age, but we know that’s just a marketing ploy to sell Deepak Chopra’s new book. Unfortunately, even if the world does end, it won’t be in time to prevent the release of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

Of course, just because you know the world is going to end doesn’t mean that you know how it’s going to end. So we’re going to tell you:

Doomsday 101

1-The Great Galactic Alignment of 2012

One of the many apocalyptical theories is that the galaxy will realign and somehow create a combined gravitational effect between the Sun and the super massive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, thus wreaking havoc on Earth. Some doomsayers use the term ‘galactic alignment’ to describe a very different phenomenon, prophesying that mass extinctions are not a random event but recur every 26 million years with December 21, 2012 being the date for the next one.

2-Geomagnetic Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Reversal

Often mistaken as a polar shift, this theory states that a massive solar flare would release energy equal to 100 billion (Yes, billion with a B) atomic bombs and trigger a geomagnetic reversal of the earth’s magnetic poles. North will become South, destroying Earth’s climate, flora and fauna and also effectively changing the title of the next instalment of Om Puri’s East is East series. On the plus side, the Houbara Bustard won’t be able to fly to Pakistan that year and will thus avoid getting shot.

3-Planet X marks the spot AKA Nibiru to you too

One of the most popular theories among doomsday proponents and near-complete idiots is the Planet X/Nibiru hypothesis. This is a planet, discovered apparently by the ancient Babylonians, that has an unpredictable orbit that makes it swing into Earth’s solar system every once in a while. Planet X-ers claim that Planet X/Nibiru will collide with or pass by Earth in 2012, causing…you guessed it…THE END OF THE WORLD!!!! The idea was first put forward in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, who described herself as a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extra-terrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. Nancy, bless her heart, was apparently chosen to warn mankind that the object would sweep through the inner Solar System in May 2003 causing Earth to undergo a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. Nothing happened. The (revised) date for this event is now…wait for it…2012!

4-Nostra-Yo Mama-damus

The great Nostradamus has spoken, the end of the world is nigh. Nostradamus writes in one of his quatrains, “In the sky will be seen a great fire dragging a trail of sparks.” Nostra-Fans say that this line clearly suggests the coming of a comet almost the size of Jupiter which will pass close to the earth causing the oceans to rise and the earth to shake. Better go buy an underground bunker since old man Nostradamus has never been wrong… at least in hindsight.

5-The Vogon Hyperspace Bypass

Although not commonly known, this theory is quite popular in the ET office. It is believed that come December 21st, the earth will be destroyed to make way for a hyperspace bypass for interstellar traffic. For more information, contact Arthur Dent. Don’t panic.

Follow the money:

The Mexican government, hurting from a drop in tourism because of ongoing drug wars in some cities, are pouring millions into a “Mundo Mayan” campaign to promote the culture and lure visitors to such destinations as the seaside ruins in Tulum and the Mayan caves in Aktun Chen.

“The Mexico Tourism Board expects that over 50 million tourists will visit the five states corresponding to the ‘Mundo Maya’ or Mayan world, over the course of 2012 to mark the beginning of a new cosmic cycle in the Mayan calendar,” said Gerardo Llanes, chief marketing officer of the Mexico Tourism Board. “The Mayans mastered aspects of astronomy, mathematics and architecture long before the Western world, and we look forward to sharing this culture with visitors from abroad.”

Even if you did have a premonition concerning the End of the world or the end of society and so on, etc. What would be the point of warning anybody? If it's the end it is the end, and a warning is really not going to make that much difference other than get everybody hyped up and scared or not. Depending on temperament.
And we all die eventually and I would rather go at the same time as everyone I love anyway, because then no-one is left to grieve. So just live in the day, it is the only thing any of us can do. My father died from a tiny virus at the age of 48, none of us saw that coming.
Don't dwell on doom and gloom it is not productive.

My Arabic years taught me: What is to come will come". So, why should I make big provisions for half a year and eat my less beloved neighbours just in order to starve 6 months later?
If the world collides with something from the outer space, or explodes, every thaught and body tissue will vanish into hot plasma. Why should I worry beforehand? - I suggest enjoying our remaining time on Earth, instead.

Everyone should have have at least 72 hours (even better...2 weeks) of food, water, medication and other essential supplies...even if it isn't the end of the world, you will be helping your neighbours in a time of emergency...power outages, storms, disease outbreaks...by not stressing the emergency response system and being self-reliant until order is restored....just a suggestion! Ah Puch can make a visit at any time!

I live every day like it's a lifetime. I watch the sun rise, speak to my god(s) and thank the goddess. Then I go about my day taking it in stride.
Given the odds... my day is a blessing.

I think people *love* this kind of stuff....Y2k, Hale Bop, the Christian dude from last March, etc...I don't think people take it very seriously (well, maybe a few in matching black jogging outfits and running shoes)..it is a cheap thrill...almost like a campfire ghost story...an excuse to have a party and send out silly internet jokes....and a great litmus test to see who has a sense of fun and the absurd

It all does make me wonder why the sad few not only believe "end of earth" prophecy, they are obsessed with it and robbing others by insisting it is truth.

We all know that the earth will spiral into the sun some day in the far far future, isn't that enough?
But NOOOOOOOoooooooooooo we have "judgment day" and "rapture" and "harmonic convergence" and "water world" & on & on.

I do like the idea of "age of enlightenment", kind of a warm fuzzy

I heard a great interview with a guy on the radio who refers to not just the 2012 stuff, but all the scares that he has been tracking since the 1950's as "Apocalypse Porn"...he says it is a form of defeatism, when the problems of the world seem so overwhelming, that instead of searching for solutions, you retreat into fairy tales:

There were, as far as I remember, always some (American) sects who foresaw the apocalypse at the last millenium, at the change from 1989 to 1990 and so forth. They always were bitterly disappointed. Sciences knows that the Earth will dissappear in millions of years. That will be long beyond my time.
If I knew that an asteroid would hit the planet in half a year, I would celebrate every single day, spend my money - and perhaps have a final shot before being barbecued alive -.
That does not speak against DJDrood's wise advise to be prepared for any sort of disaster by raisings stocks at home. I always have enough canned food and candles for 2 weeks, just in case of a general power cut-down, blizzard, flooding, or other.

I've just been reading about The Doomsday Clock. It is a symbolic clock face maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of The bulletin of The Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago.
The doomsday clock conveys how close humanity is to a catastrophic destruction -the figurative midnight - and monitors the means humankind could use to obliterate itself.
first and foremost, these include nuclear weapons, but they also encompass climate change - changing technologies and new developments in the life sciences that could inflict irrevocable harm.
The most recently officially announced setting -five minutes to midnight was made on 10th January 2012.
Repent and believe, the is end is nigh! Now where did I read or hear that? Got to be a Christian source, a Sunday bulletin or a sandwich board, where...oh where..?
