The Hobgoblin Advises!

Postby Dathi » 08 Jan 2012, 10:55

Greetings,

Who has met Loki?

Tricksters abound in many cultures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trickster Be they in the form of Puck, Loki, Brer Rabbit, the "Gentle Folk" of Ireland, or whatever, the Hobgoblin is always ready with "advice". Such advice is always seductivly expedient, and often very risky to follow. And we know this, but still listen to those mischievious voices in the ear.

Here is a good Puck (Robin Goodfellow) resource: http://www.boldoutlaw.com/puckrobin/puck.html

On Loki: http://www.octavia.net/vikings/loki.htm and I quote:
"His activities ran from the merely mischievous to the blatantly malicious. Supremely clever, Loki ensnared everyone in complicated problems, to which he always supplied a remedy - through his solution often engendered even greater troubles."

Have you ever heard the Hobgoblin's advice?

Here are some common ones:

"You're tired now, leave it till the morning when you are fresh again". (Homework, ironed shirt for work etc)
"One more pint, just one, you'll feel fine in the morning".
"Don't stop for directions, you'll find out where you are as soon as you crest the hill".
"Buy it, yes buy it now. You can sort out the credit card later".
"You don't need oven gloves. It won't be that hot".
"Go a bit faster now, there are never speed-traps on this road".
"We won't be out for long, and the weather is fine. Don't bother with a jacket".

Yours?

Regards,

Dathi :innocent:

I always thought these were more the voice of the saboteur. They can only really result in a fall, can't they?
Whereas this...

"Don't stop for directions, you'll find out where you are as soon as you crest the hill".

this sounds like a good idea at the time. I always think the trickster says something that sounds totally reasonable. It's only with hindsight that we realised we've been tricked, and in the process taught a valuable lesson.

This sounds a lot like the helpful advice Gerrard Hoffnung offered to visitors to London in 1950s, e.g.

"Have you tried the famous echo in the Reading Room in the British Library?"

"When entering a first-class rail carriage, it is customary to shake hands with the occupants."
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way on.

That brings to mind this saying: “If the Gods are watching us, the very least we can do is be entertaining.” I forget who said it, but that all right. :)
