Twig, there are no easy answers here, and certainly no road map to follow. We just try to do the best we can and remember that whatever we do, our dogs still look at us with loving eyes.

It is the hardest thing in the world to let a pet go when they are in pain but I am sure Riley will have left a shining light behind just for you. Beloved pets leave such a void in our hearts and homes when they pass on and the depth of your grief is testament to the love you gave to each other
I hope that day by day Riley’s spirit and the memories of the life you shared help fill that void.

Twig, I am in tears reading this. I know just how hard the decision is to make. Like Hennie has said, do not blame your self. Your beloved Riley is not longer suffering. I understand you may not believe us yet, but this moment will pass, and there will come a time when fond memories will fill your heart with joy and gladness.
Though I have never met you, you are a warm, loving, compassionate person with lots of love still left to give.
Please, Twig, be kind to yourself, and allow yourself permission to grieve.
Though Riley has passed, he has now achieved a very special ability. That is the ability to live forever fondly in your memories if you can let him do so

These are such dear, dear replies. Thank you, kytty, Susanne, and everyone. Incredibly, I got a call from my dad this evening, and my mother has been admitted to the hospital with a very large blockage to her heart. She is 86. It is a dicey situation. So, I am leaving in the morning and just wanted all of you kind souls to know I wasn't ignoring you.

Wow, my world is spinning out of control!

PS I will be getting Riley's ashes tomorrow. I hope that's a comfort instead of a crying attack. I sort of don't have time to feel anything. I'm in "get-packed-and-on-the-road" mode.
