You're quite welcome.  I find it very powerful to use Gaelic in ritual.  I'm sure the same applies to all the Celtic languages.

Sorry to bother you but I was wondering if you could give me a prounciation guide...In my old coven we used to do a lot of our ritual in gaelic, but I had a prounciation guide...something simple please...

I find it invigorating to pick up scraps of the ancient languages,
would dearly love to learn them fluently, but from my studys I find
it hard to beleive the ancients preached peace,I beleive to preach peace is to lie. It is written"There is enough time for peace in the grave" anciant scottish rite; Also in the hava maal it states a man who aviods war shall
find no peace, anyway regnar redbeard states might is right.
MY opinions are based in morals and dogma of the ancient scottish rite and the hava maal  anyone care to comment please i am listening

I, too, find the use of the Gaelic tremendously important in ritual; I also do Gaelic chant, and was lead to my spiritual path through the study of my family's heritage language, Scots Gaelic... I appreciate the posting, because, although I had translated my own versions, I never know how particularly well I have done; I am not fluent and don't see fluency on the horizon, but I am committed for life to the language.

I am so pleased to see such love for the Celtic languages! I noticed that in Cornwall, signs are now being posted in native Cornish. I've seen this in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, too!

I am so happy to see an interest in Celtic languages! I've only studied Scots Gaelic, but there are a lot of similarities to Irish.

You've probably all already looked at this already but in case you haven't you should check out Carmichael's Carmina Gadelica: http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/cg1/index.htm

Although technically Christian there are a lot of invocations which call on Mac Lir or Brid, and it would be fairly easy to invoke other deities in the place of the name of the saints.

One of the ideas that has interested me for a while now is the usage of Old Irish (Namely medieval Irish) as a language solely for ritual. Seeing as the language is dead now it could be taken and re-used in a more spiritual fashion, much in the same way that the church uses Latin. A language whose cadence is not of the vernacular, but rather towards the divine, and coming out of the old traditions, could become a very potent tool for ceremony.

Thank you for the link! I would love to see the ancient Celtic languages used in ritual, as well as see the modern versions revived and used as living languages. I think the soul of a culture is in the language.

Thank you Fitheach, this helped me in my journey of learning Scots Gaelic -I realised just now that is what I am doing

Probably not in a broad way, but in the depth of it. Alike to learning the language of the trees, plants, animals.. focussing on the sensual more than the intellectual.
But who knows, in time..? I've found that, apart from intellectual understanding being a 'means to', one also develops it by the way/as one goes along.

Just a quick query, why would you use the familiar thu rather than the polite sibh when addressing directions/elements etc? Is it to indicate the closeness of your connection? I tend to offer maximum respect as to an elder, hence sibh rather than thu, but am wondering if I'm a wee bit old fashioned and formal..

Not that I'll change how I address the mountains or elements in ritual or ask anyone else to do as I do, I'm just interested in what others practise and why. I've had very intimate conversations with elements but those tend to be in my native tongue anyway, and not part of my formal greetings. Anyone that knows me knows I am not that good at structured ritual anyway but I'm trying to get a vocabulary in Gaelic that can be used for the more formal greetings and invocations anyway and in that respect your translations are very helpful thanks I only studied Gaelic for a year and a half at evening classes so am no way fluent enough to construct the kind of sentence I want to use, based on the travel directions, shopping list and telling the time of ferries vocab we were taught in class!
