I think the last time I entered a competition was in my inter-college eisteddfod morris team days :old: – I’m not really a competitive sort of person. However, there’s a little voice in my head saying “This is a Druid eisteddfod; it will be more about sharing the Awen than getting to the front of the queue.” In that spirit, here’s a song I call Prince Pryderi.

I’ve a little project going at the moment to sing songs based on the Mabinogion and other old stories. It gets people to ask where they came from and I can then point them to our rich mythological heritage. I tend to sing down at the local folk club (or in my kitchen!) – a great place for keeping the old songs and stories alive (both places are actually). I’m a believer in live music rather than the pressed and preserved, stuck to a piece of paper or plastic kind. I agree with the person who said “Songs are like butterflies; they fly from heart to heart” but, for that to happen, even more than being listened to, songs need to be sung. I’d be happy if anyone takes the time to listen to the song but I’d be even more pleased if anyone felt like learning it to sing at their own hearthside.

I didn’t write the song for this eisteddfod; I’ve sung it out a couple of times and, having been asked for the words and tune, I put it on Soundcloud several months ago. (See my Soundcloud profile for the motives behind posting my songs there.) If this disqualifies my entry, I apologise – those with the power, please delete it!

With blessings of the approaching harvest;
May the rain be soft upon your face,
May the sun be warm upon your back,
And may the harvest be safely gathered in.
