Lyrics for you to play with.

Postby Whitemane » 08 Sep 2012, 15:12

I'm posting these for someone with a bit more practice to use. All my musical skills are very rusty and I don't think I can do a decent job of writing the accompanying music. Feel free to use them and make necessary changes, as long as you acknowledge the source. Send me a pm if you are interested in using them.

These words arose out of the death of Neil Armstrong. I was thinking about the Apollo missions and those first earthrise pictures from Apollo 8 and what an experience seeing the first one must have been. Then I thought, what would it feel like to be returning from a really long trip, like the first mission to Mars? After two years in in a giant soup tin, with earth out of sight for a lot of that, I think you'd want to run around like a 5-year-old, throw your clothes off, and jump in a lake, and you would probably never want to leave the planet again. At that point, the whole thing poured out of me. It really seems to have been Awen in action. I had most of it written in fifteen minutes.

I’m Coming Home.

We’ve been gone so long,
So far away,
In these metal walls,
Day after day.

Now we can see,
Now we can see,
Our magic world, clearer each day.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
I’m coming home, to the earth sea and sky.

I want to feel air,
Fresh morning air,
I want to feel wind in my face and my hair.

I want to see birds,
Birds in the air,
Watching them fly, and hear song in the sky.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
I’m coming home, to wind, rain, and sand.

I want to feel rain,
Soaking me through,
To wash in earth’s waters, cleanse body and soul.

I want to swim,
In life-giving water,
Swim in a lake, and see otters at play.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
I’m coming home to clouds, calm, and cool.

Home for green spring,
Home for bright summer,
Home for gold autumn,
Home for white winter, feel that cycle again.

I want to feel ground,
Earth in my toes,
Earth in my toes, and run in the grass.

I want to see trees,
Great leafy trees,
and lie in the flowers, the flowers for hours.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
I’m coming home, let my spirit run free.

To feel the suns heat,
Warming my flesh,
Warming my heart, set my spirit ablaze.

To sit in the grove,
Around a camp fire,
A hot open fire, surrounded by friends.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
To my mother earth, so precious to me.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
I’m coming home, to where my heart is.

I’m coming home,
I’m coming home,
To my Mother Earth,
To stand at her side.
May the long time sun shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you,
Guide your way on.

Do you have a tempo or style in mind? Looking at those lyrics I was thinking a tempo and rhythm similar to U2's 'Where the Streets Have No Name.' It's the fast-ish beat meets elongated lyrical phrases and it causes tension excitement and releif all at once. Does that fit with what you felt for it?

That sounds pretty close. definitely a good, brisk tempo giving a real sense of excitement. :yay:

It's about excitement and celebration.

I wasn't thinking in terms of a Celtic sound when I wrote it, but if you want to try it and think you can make it work, that's fine. If you're not thinking about a Celtic sound, I don't have a problem with that either.

What an exciting project! I don't mean to claim the words for myself either.. It could turn out to be a really excellent collaboration between a number of people.

I just felt like I was channeling an idea, because it only took a few minutes to put together.

I had to put a little effort into shaping it up, but I think was given something to share by something beyond me.
