Druids at the BBC

BBC radio 4 have a new series of 'in our time', a discussion program hosted by Melvyn Bragg with a panel of experts. Great show. On Friday 21st September, 9 a.m. b.s.t the topic will be the history of the druids. Unmissable! It will also be available as a podcast.

Thanks for the heads up, should be interesting. The BBC website has the programme scheduled as Thursday 20th though, not the Friday. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/programmes/schedules/fm/2012/09/20)

Sorry! My mistake, it's Thursday. I'll remind everyone the day before anyway, get it near the top of the board. Might encourage some interesting debate. Don't know if they'll touch on modern druidry

I rather enjoyed it and recommend listening.
It was three well-respected academics talking largely about ancient Druidry, with a little bit about the revival in the 17th Century with Melvyn Bragg. The best part was Barry Cunliffe explaining, in words of relatively few syllables, to Bragg that the Druids as we know them were not there when Stonehenge was built but that they are the, essentially direct, descendants of the priestly class that was around when it was built. They had a slightly different perspective from Ronald Hutton, but one that could be resolved by discussion rather than disputation.
