I can see both sides of the argument.
I understand that it can require certain investments in education, equipment and energy to maintain a certain quality level. And I see nothing wrong with that if there are people willing to pay for that.

But for me there is a difference between the 'music industry' and the druid community.

In practise, when you perform for the druid community, you perform at a camp or gathering that is run and maintained by loads of volunteers. Skilled people who's time and energy is just as valuable as everybody elses.
I know that 80% of that crowd are passive consumers, but still, out of respect for the other 20% who do put in their efford for free, you can't ask money IMHO. Unless you are of the Ferengi tribe ;-).
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence

I grew up in a small corner of the music industry. My whole family were involved long before I was born. The argument in this thread is an ongoing and seemingly unsolvable one. There appear to me to be a few different types of personalities working within the music industry as musicians.

The Technicians: very technically proficient musicians constantly updating their sound and expanding their style.
The Artists: People capable of making beautiful sounds with minimal effort regardless of the equipment they have in front of them.
The Creative Technician: a cross between an artist and a technician. Generally very talented and very humble
The Egotists: People who are brash, aggressive and in your face.
The Virtuosos: a cross between an Egotist and a technician.
The Ultratype: all of the above.
The Workmen: treats music as a job and nothing else
The Chancer: we all know them!

The artist and the chancer will always try and work for free or less than the gigging musician. The technicians, the workmen and the egotists will always complain about this. Meanwhile, the virtuoso will go from band to band playing brilliantly but falling out with everybody, the creative technician will always have well paid work and the ultratype will have just enough talent, ability, charm, ego and humility to make the big-time

Thats my thoughts on it anyway.
