950 registered members of this Celtic board, and are there no other pipers out there to help form the "Druid's Head Pipers"?

I can be an appreciative audience!!!
Pay attention to the path, and learn the hard way.  The easy way is fun and entertaining, but you take away very little.

Kernos ~

I've emailed you a .wav file of part of "Prince Charles' Welcome to Lochaber." The recording quality is not good, but it will give you a taste!

I'm a fellow piper! Although I must admit that my Highland pipes are kind of "off limits" to me right now, because I'm 20 weeks pregnant! I still use my practice chanter and my shuttle pipes (Gods I love those!) and still make it to band practice almost every week. I play with the Birmingham Society of Piping ( http://www.bsop.org ). I jokingly call myself "the weakest link" in the band, because it seems that I have little opportunity to practice during the week. I was really beating myself up for it for a while, but my PM and other band members are very supportive (and patient!). It wasn't until just about a month ago that I realised that hey, I'm the only mom here, and that can have a LOT to do with the lack of practice time! Especially since my two year old loves to run up and pull the chanter out of my mouth mid-playing, and attempt to run off with it himself -- resulting in more than a few busted lips on my part! So, I found him a little plastic recorder, and now I just have to tune out the sound of his joyous tooting while I'm practicing!

Ladydragonstar ~

Wonderful, and well-met! Our group is the Pipes and Drums of the Delaware Valley (http://www.pddv.homestead.com/) My spouse, Raevynfyre, is a flourishing tenor drummer with the band. In fact, we leave in an hour or so for a Saint Patrick's Day Parade. :cover:

I, too, am one of the "weak links," and will march today with my drones corked. I've only been on the full pipes for about 2 months now. I can understand why they're "off-limits" at 20 weeks pregnant! The air pressure could blow the little bairn out too soon!

I'm also lucky to be in a band where folks are friendly and understanding. When I beat myself up for not improving faster my PM says, "Hey, we were all there once."

Glad to meet a fellow piper - let's stay in touch! :guinness:

KERNOS -- can we have a Highland Pipes forum?

Peace,

Yep, I'm due July 26, that's two days before my birthday! My other son Collin Micael (transpose the first and middle names to find out who he was named after!) was born two days before Christmas, and two days after Yule.

I didn't even bother asking my doctor about playing the pipes. A lady who used to be in my pipe band (had the most gorgeous set of pipes with engraved silver ferrels and slides -- she said they intimidated her because when she pulled them out, everyone expected her to come off like Alistair Gilles, but she was in fact a Grade 5 piper) had three kids, and said that every time she tried to even play the practice chanter while pregnant with one of her three, she started having contractions! I don't have that problem, but the practice chanter really does take the wind out of me!

I've been playing since 1998, but I took about a year and a half off, and that set me back almost to square one. I guess you can say that I don't have five years experience, I've had about one years experience that I've done over five times!

Just recently I purchased a neat little toy -an electronic practice chanter. They're a bit expensive, but really useful - and take no breath at all. Used with earphones, you can practice just about anywhere. And the electronic contacts that serve as finger holes are absolutely unforgiving on crossing noises - which is also good practice!

They say it takes seven years to make a piper, LadyDragonstar, and seven generations before that! Unfortunately I lack the seven generations. I've been at it exactly two years now, and still can't play most of the tunes up to speed with the rest of the band. Perhaps by this time next year . . .

Yes, this is one incident where it's actually beneficial to be a southpaw in the land of righties! Since my left hand is on the high hand and is my dominant hand, it's the one that picks up first naturally, thus eliminating the problem of crossing noises! Woo Hoo! Doesn't exactly make up for the fact that I can't use a can opener worth a crap, but hey, at least it's something! :-)

What about the Uilleann pipes such as in the "White Gander" (a story I can tell to you boys and girls if you are good).
Does anybody here play or ever played the Uilleann pipes?

Oh, the pipes! I love the pipes, love anything with a drone. One day, when I haven't got any neigbours....maybe I'll try and learn them!

Pipes

Postby Sigbrit » 31 Aug 2004, 20:13

Hi there Oak Wise and all,

You are not entirely on your own.

I'm a Bardic Grade and play Northumbrian Small pipes, Northumbrian Half Long (Border) Pipes and English Union (Uillean Pipes) as well as Tinwhistle and Low whistle.

I'm definately a bellows piper but have recently got my hands on a set of Mouth-blown Medieaval English Great Pipes in the key of A.

Piping trivia:
The Catholic Church in Britain once banned piping as 'Music of the Devil'. It was thought that the sound of Bagpipes carried on the wind to the spiritworld. This is the reason that pipes are still often played at funerals to endsure that the departed arrived in the next world with a fanfare.

I would send a photo for those of you out there who have not seen Northumbrian Pipes but am new to this thing and trying to find out how to do it.
