I still use my practice chanter and my shuttle pipes (Gods I love those!) and still make it to band practice almost every week. I play with the Birmingham Society of Piping ( http://www.bsop.org ). I jokingly call myself "the weakest link" in the band, because it seems that I have little opportunity to practice during the week. I was really beating myself up for it for a while, but my PM and other band members are very supportive (and patient!). It wasn't until just about a month ago that I realised that hey, I'm the only mom here, and that can have a LOT to do with the lack of practice time! Especially since my two year old loves to run up and pull the chanter out of my mouth mid-playing, and attempt to run off with it himself -- resulting in more than a few busted lips on my part! So, I found him a little plastic recorder, and now I just have to tune out the sound of his joyous tooting while I'm practicing!
You're due in July, right?

I've been playing since 1998, but I took about a year and a half off, and that set me back almost to square one. I guess you can say that I don't have five years experience, I've had about one years experience that I've done over five times!

Just recently I purchased a neat little toy -an electronic practice chanter. They're a bit expensive, but really useful - and take no breath at all. Used with earphones, you can practice just about anywhere. And the electronic contacts that serve as finger holes are absolutely unforgiving on crossing noises - which is also good practice!
They say it takes seven years to make a piper, LadyDragonstar, and seven generations before that! Unfortunately I lack the seven generations. I've been at it exactly two years now, and still can't play most of the tunes up to speed with the rest of the band. Perhaps by this time next year . . .
