Pepper Scott was a valued member of the order and a fierce supporter of the Message Board. As we spring forward, we dust off the cobwebs and find all sorts of precious items long forgotten. This is one sort of precious item sitting in the dust of the archives of the Eisteddfod Competition archives. It is a 9x9x9 poem (9 syllables, 9 lines per verse, 9 verses) for which she was famous. We offer this in memory of Pepper Scott and hope you enjoy it.

Walter William Melnyk, known to many in OBOD as OakWyse, has been an OBOD Druid since 2002. He has recently published a third book in his Tales of Avalon Series. Unlike the first two, The Apple and the Thorn and Tales of Avalon, this one is not a novel. Rather, The Wisdom of Avalon is a republication of the Thirteen Marsh Tales (from Tales of Avalon) in a separate volume, together with reflection questions for each Tale and suggestions for using the Tales in Daily Meditations.

   The land is dimly lit by a pale pre-dawn light, and in the East, low in the lightening sky, shines the brilliant and lovely Morning Star, the light of Venus herself, illuminating the half-darkness. A sudden breeze, harbinger of dawn, stirs the long grasses, stiffened by frost. Fragments of mist hang over the land, partly obscuring it. Among the gorse bushes something is moving; the grasses stir again as a dark form passes among them, disappearing into the deep shade under the knotted gorse shoots then re-appearing in the twilight.

Strength Yields

Barren strength of rock
Yields to soft persuasion
Windblown seeds crack, bring forth
From death throes, fragile beauty
Death-wielding birth
Life-giving death

Threadlike roots reach, tentative,
Blindly search for nourishment
Slender stem yearns toward light
Knowing its need of warmth
Humbly vulnerable
Nobly dependent

Cracks formed in granite’s face
Herald a wisp of pale green
Leaves unfurl, tiny brave banners
Masterpiece unseen yet perfect
Simple complexity
Modesty’s triumph
